Evidence-based Clinical Practice – Lecture 7 (UNIVERSITY OF AMSTERDAM)

The advantages of analysing multiple individuals are that it allows for generalization of findings to others. However, it does not tell us anything about the individual. The analysis of an individual does not allow for generalization to others but does tell us something about the individual.

In an N=1 analysis, the baseline is compared with a treatment for a single individual. Normative comparisons make use of comparing a single individual to a distribution of the norm (e.g. normal distribution of test scores of a normative sample).

The question of whether there is an improvement requires a comparison while the question of whether there is a significant improvement requires multiple observations (e.g. baseline). There are several ways in which N=1 designs bridge the gap between science and practice:

  1. Multiple N=1 studies in practice indicating improvement implies the need for a randomized controlled trial as

Evidence-based Clinical Practice – Lecture 5 (UNIVERSITY OF AMSTERDAM)

Nested data (i.e. multilevel data) refers to data gathered in multiple groups (e.g. intervention study in multiple classrooms). Nested data that is analysed in the usual way can have strong consequences for the significance of the results (i.e. results being significant while they are actually not). Nested data being analysed in the wrong way leads to drawing false conclusions that something is effective while it is not.

The unit of analysis problem refers to the situation where the moderator variable exists at a different level than the independent and the dependent variable. Using the regular statistical analyses with nested data violates the assumption of independence of observations because it ignores the fact that individuals share a common environment. This may lead to an increase in type-I errors due to the small standard errors.

The multilevel analysis makes use of a general linear model. In

Evidence-based Clinical Practice – Lecture 6 (UNIVERSITY OF AMSTERDAM)

There are three types of theories:

  1. Focusing on manifest variables
This entails focusing on the variables that can be observed (e.g. a person is distracted and has trouble organizing tasks).
  2. Focusing on latent variables
This entails focusing on the variables that are indirectly observed (e.g. based on other variables.) (e.g. a person has ADHD).
  3. Focusing on relations between manifest variables (i.e. network models)
This entails focusing on the relations between the variables that can be observed (e.g. a person is distracted and thus has trouble organizing tasks).

The DSM-5 makes use of theories based on latent variables.

A theory focusing on manifest variables has the problem of whether there is a cut-off or not (e.g. a person is distracted or not). Besides that, if there is a cut-off, the question is what the cut-off is. Lastly,

Evidence-based Clinical Practice – Lecture 3 (UNIVERSITY OF AMSTERDAM)

There are several ethical guidelines in science:

  1. Always do an a-priori power analysis
In underpowered studies, there might be insufficiently meaningful information (1), more replicability problems due to the higher probability of type-II errors (2) and are a waste of resources (3). In overpowered studies, it unnecessarily exposes participants to an intervention which may not work (1) and are a waste of resources (2).
  2. Always report effect sizes
This allows others to interpret the strength of the findings.
  3. Avoid questionable research practices
This should include correcting for multiple testing (1), no optional stopping (2), no optional omissions (3) and report all experiments even with a non-significant result (4).
  4. Describe materials and instructions precisely
This allows others to replicate or identify details which may cause the findings or the absence thereof.
  5. Precise accounting
    This includes storing the

The Bayes factor (B) compares the probability of an experimental theory to the probability of the null hypothesis. It gives the means of adjusting your odds in a continuous way.

  • If B is greater than 1, your data support the experimental hypothesis over the null
  • If B is less than 1,...
