(Felt) Alphabet Letters

Singing a well-known tune of the alphabet is great and fun but it does not mean that a child is able to perceive letters yet!

Introduce your child a fun activity that can help them learn to recognize, pronounce letters, make words and even build sentences by using pieces of colorful letters and pictures.
They will have fun sticking the pieces on a flannel board and learn the sounds of the letters .

Let them master the alphabet and kindergarten will be a breeze!

What You Need:

• Fabric scraps
• Scissors
• Red felt (cardboard, cloth)
• Sewing machine or  glue
•  pictures matching the letters of the alphabet
• Oak tag poster board (Oak tag paper is like poster board, but thicker and holds up better.)
• Rubber cement
• Flannel board (The flannel board is a surface- a board usually painted to depict a background scene appropriate to the story being told. Paper cutouts of characters and objects in the story are then placed on the board, and moved around, as the story unfolds. )

What to Do:

1. Cut out every letter from the alphabet

2. Use the red felt (cardboard, cloth) to cut out (total number of ) letters of the alphabet same size each.

3. Attach each letter to a piece of felt (or cardboard) using a zigzag stitch on a sewing machine or glue to attach the letter.

4. Search for cute pictures starting with each letter of the alphabet. (For example, an airplane for A,

butterfly for B, cat for C, and so on.)

5. Glue the pictures to the oak tag poster board. Cut around each picture , fit the size then laminate the pictures.

(Use rubber cement to glue felt onto the back of each picture so they will stick to the flannel board.)

6. Set out the letters, pictures, and flannel board. Invite your child to attach the letters in order on the

flannel board. Encourage her to identify each letter as she attaches it to the board.

8. Then ask her to match each letter to the picture that has the same beginning letter or sound. Invite

her to say the name of the object in the picture. Sound out the word together until she figures out

which letter matches the picture.

9. If the flannel board is not big enough to fit all the letters and pictures put out half of the activity at a time.
