Omdat populaire muziek zo’n grote rol speelt in de levens van adolescenten, kan de jeugd niet begrepen worden zonder te kijken naar de manier waarop de muziek in de levens van adolescenten past. Van muziek krijgen adolescenten informatie over de maatschappij, sociale en gender rollen en verwacht gedrag, het helpt bij het vormen van een identiteit.
Volgens de sociale cognitieve theorie leren mensen hoe ze zich moeten gedragen door te kijken naar anderen, dit gedrag zullen ze imiteren. Deze theorie zal dus ook voorspellen dat mensen die luisteren naar muziek met teksten die gaan over seks dit gedrag zullen aannemen als gewild en normaal waardoor ze dit gedrag zullen imiteren. Wat mensen leren van mediarolmodellen wordt scripts genoemd. Een script laat zien wat normaal zou gebeuren bij een bepaalde gebeurtenis, hoe een persoon zich zou moeten gedragen tijdens zo’n gebeurtenis en wat de mogelijke uitkomsten van hun gedrag zou kunnen zijn.
Deze studie test de relatie tussen de blootstelling aan muziek die degradeert en muziek die niet degradeert en de veranderingen in het seksuele gedrag van een adolescent. Het onderzoek collecteerde longitudinale data over het gebruik van media en het seksuele gedrag van adolescenten. De survey’s werden afgenomen via de telefoon. De participanten werden 1 jaar en 3 jaar later weer overnieuw geïnterviewd. De vragenlijst meet: media gebruik, seks kennis, opvattingen en gedrag en een grote set van demografische en psychologische variabelen die seksueel gedrag en media gebruik voorspellen. De participanten waren 12 tot 17 jaar.
Belangrijkste resultaten:
Het onderzoek bewijst dat blootstelling aan seksuele inhoud van teksten van liedjes gerelateerd is aan ontwikkelingen in seksuele activiteiten bij adolescenten.
Blootstelling aan muziek met seksuele teksten was niet gerelateerd aan veranderingen in seksueel gedrag als die teksten niet seksueel degraderend waren.
De bovenstaande bevindingen staan los van het ras van de participanten.
De onderzoekers zeggen dat het bovenstaande verband een causaal verband is maar omdat ze te maken hebben met correlatie mogen ze dit niet stellen maar moeten ze het zien als een waarschijnlijkheid.
