Aftrekken tot 100: hoe doe je dat? - Peltenburg & Van den Heuvel - Panhuizen - 2013 - Artikel
Kinderen die slecht kunnen rekenen zoude meer baat hebben bij één expliciete aanpak voor een rekensom. Vooral het leren aftrekken is voor kinderen op het speciaal basisonderwijs (sbo) een probleem.
In sommige gevallen is, naast de standaard afhaalaanpak, de aanvulaanpak een goede aanpak zijn. Bijvoorbeeld in het geval van 62-58 (58+2=60, 60+2=62, dus het antwoord is 4). Er is onderzocht of sbo-leerlingen deze aanpak spontaan gebruiken.
In dit onderzoek zijn verschillende aftrekopgaven opgenomen: opgaven met grote en kleine verschillen tussen de getallen, kale opgaven en opgaven gepresenteerd in een context (een afhaalcontext en een aanvulcontext).
56 spo-leerlingen van 8 tot 12 jaar maakten de toets. Allen hadden zij niveau eind groep 4 en hadden één tot vijf jaar rekenachterstand. De meeste leerlingen hadden enkel de afhaalaanpak geleerd.
Uit het onderzoek bleek dat in 34% van de gevallen waarin de leerlingen een antwoord hadden ingevuld zij spontaan de aanvulaanpak gebruikten. Deze aanpak werd vooral toegepast wanneer de opgaven een aanvulcontext hadden en opgaven waarbij de getallen dicht bij elkaar lagen. De rekenwijze hing sterk samen met het type opgave. Leerlingen pasten hun manier aan, aan de eigenschappen van de opgaven. Wanneer leerlingen gebruik maakten van de aanvulaanpak hadden zij 17% meer goed dan bij de afhaalaanpak.
Vervolgonderzoek zal moeten onderzoeken of deze neiging ook plaatsvindt bij kinderen in het reguliere onderwijs. Daarnaast is het voor het basisonderwijs van belang om naast de afhaalaanpak, ook de aanvulaanpak goed te onderwijzen.
