  • When you fly to Belize from the Netherlands, you will often have a transfer in the United States or, say, Panama or Guatemala. International travel arrives at the Philip Goldson International Airport in Ladyville, 18 km northwest of Belize City.

  • There are no trains in Belize.

  • A number of bus companies provide connections across the country. The main routes are from Belize City west to Belmopan, San Ignacio and Benque Viejo del Carmen; north to Orange Walk and Corozal; and south to Punta Gorda, Independence and Dangriga, from here you can get to Palencia. The buses are not comfortable (old American school buses or so-called chicken buses) and the roads are often unpaved.

  • By car you are more flexible than by public transport. Belize has 4 two-lane paved highways. Most other roads are one or -two lane roads and are often unpaved. It is quite expensive to rent a car in Belize. So be sure to check out the alternatives or find some people you can share the cost with. To rent a car, you need a driver's license and must be at least 25 years old.

  • Almost all towns in Belize are small enough to explore on foot, but for safety, it's better to take a cab.
