1.Introduction/decription department
The hospital that I will work in for 8 weeks is called the Coptic Hospital. The hospital is located in Nairobi at the Ngong Road. In the morning traffic it is about 1 hour driving with the matatu and a half hour walking to the hospital. It takes so long because of the traffic jam in the morning. We will be working from Monday till Friday in the hospital from 8 am till 4 pm. On Sunday we will work in an orphanage called Raha kids.
The hospital is an mission hospital did means that it is run by the church. Because it is an mission hospital it is also more a private hospital than a public hospital. People need to have money to be threaded in Coptic hospital. For example a private room cost 9000 shilling a night, an semi private 3500 shilling a night at a room for 5 patients cost 3500 shilling a night. Before the patient get discharge they first need to go to the cashier to pay for the time in the hospital. They need to pay for every material, vaccination etcetera that is needed for their treatment. If the patient has an insurance they can submit it.
Because the hospital is an mission hospital some parts are financiered by the church. The hospital has an HIV department were patient can be tested and treated for free when they have HIV. There are now more than 6000 patient that are threaded by the hospital and everyday they get new patients.
The first two weeks I work on the maternity department. After these two weeks I will rotate to another department. This means that I will work on 4 different departments in the hospital. I don’t know on witch department I will work next, but they let as choose.
The maternity department is an department were women come to deliver their baby and recovery after an c-section. The recovery department and the delivery department is on the same department. When people need to go for an c-section they go to the theater (operation rooms). In Kenia nurses do not have to do an different study to became an maternity nurse it is the same education as the general nurse. Most of the time nurses deliver the baby and there is no doctor present. The doctors don’t even come to check the newborn.
When women have a normal delivery they will be discharge the next day. When the women had an c-section they need to stay in the hospital for 4 days.
The nurses give the mothers education about the baby, they get help by cleaning and dressing their baby, they get there medicines if needed, the newborn gets his first vaccinations, deliver the baby, check the fetal hartrate and prepare the mother for c-section (this means give them a canule and a catherter). These are some tasks of the nurses on the maternity ward.
In the raha orphanages lives 80 boys from 0 till 18. At the orphanage the boys get education and a home. We go on Sunday when it is there day of so we can do activities with the boys.
- Expectations towards the internship
What do I expect from Coptic Hospital?
From the hospital I expect that they offer me a good mentorship during my internship in the hospital. This means that they provide me a mentor that has the same education level as my education. My mentor helps me to pass my internship in Coptic Hospital
I expect that my mentor and colleagues that they provide feedback regularly on my behavior, my nursing skills, attitude and functioning as a nursing student. I expect there is at least ones a week an evaluation with my mentor. In this evaluation we can discus my progress as a student nurse. I expect from my mentor and colleagues that they immediately talk to me when something is wrong concerns behavior, my nursing skills, attitude and functioning as a nursing student.
When there is something wrong I feel save enough to tell my mentor. When my mentor is not around I feel save enough to tell one of my colleague if something is wrong. This means that my colleagues are respectful to me and talk to me in English not Swahili. When an event happened which had an really big impact on me. I can discuss and evaluate this situation with my mentor. I feel save enough to express my emotions and feelings towards my mentor.
I am able to contact my mentor for help, with my schoolwork or with questions. I expect that my mentor gives me help if necessary with my essays. My mentor takes time to help me out with my questions. During my working shifts I am always able to ask my colleagues questions about the patients care. From my mentor I expect feedback on my essay.
I expect from the hospital that I work from 8 pm till 5 am during daylight. This way I am able to travel with public transport during daylight to insurance my safety.
I expect from the hospital that I do not have to perform patient skills where I do not feel qualified to. When I can not for some reason give a patient the care that he or she needs my colleagues help me.
What can the hospital expect of me?
I am a motivated nursing student that is wants to put her knowledge and skill to practice. In the First year of my study I had a 4 weeks internship in an elderly home in Amsterdam called ‘De Drie Hoven’. In my First year I also had a 4 weeks internship in a hospital at the hematology department. The hospital is called ‘VU medical centre’ in Amsterdam. In my second year I had a 10 weeks internship at an elderly home in Haarlem called ‘Schoterhof’. In my third year I had a 30 weeks internship at a hospital on the pediatric department. The hospital is called ‘Spaarne hospital’ in Hoofddorp. I am able to bring the skills and knowledge that I learned during these internships to practice.
I am someone that is in the beginning somewhat shy and on the background. I First need to adjust to the new environment, when I am adjusted to the new situation I will start to talk more. The shy and quiet part is not because I do not like it or something like that. When I met all my colleagues and learn about the organization of the hospital I will start to ask a lot more questions and be more initiative.
During my education I learned a lot of nursing skills that I would like to perform in practice.
I am open and willingly to learn from the feedback and improving points that I get from my mentor and colleagues. I am eager to learn and ask questions If something is unclear to me. I show initiative to accomplish my learning goals and make sure that a pass my learning goals within 8 weeks of internship. When something is wrong I immediately talk to my mentor and ask for help.
In my treatment I will show respect towards the patient. I will safely, effectively and hygienically proceed.
Furthermore, I will report regularly my progress to my internship mentor. I will guard my learning process and ensure that I have enough time to work on it. I will ask as many questions to my colleagues and my mentor and show that I am assertive.
In addition, I will ask regular feedback to my colleagues about my learning process.
At the beginning of the service I will tell my mentor what I want to learn that day.

This internship will help me become a better nurse in the Netherlands.
This internship will be at the level of a bachelor nurse in the beginning of my fourth year. I am able to perform my knowledge and skills that a learn during 3 years of study in practice. When I am not able I will ask my mentor to help me perform it and learn from her. When I am not capable of performing a nursing skill at a patient I would not be forced to do it. My mentor will help me with it and teach me the knowledge that is necessary. This makes it able for me to perform the skill later on my own.
The first week I will walk together with my mentor or a colleague. After the first week I will be working under supervision of my mentor or colleague. This makes it able for me to ask questions if necessary. My actions that I perform are always under responsibility of my (permanent) mentor. When my (permanent) mentor does not trust my nursing skills I would not perform them and ask my mentor to help and teach me. When I perform a nursing skill for the first time my mentor will supervise. If I do not feel secure to perform a curtain nursing skill my mentor will always be there. As soon as I master a curtain nursing skill I will practice it on supervision.
