Title: Ethiopia plants 350 million trees in one day
Ethiopia plants 350 million trees in one day

The world record for planting the most trees in one day was held by India at 50 million trees, untill a few days ago when Ethiopia’s minister of innovation and technology, Dr Getahun Mekuria, tweeted the number of trees planted throughout the day: 353 million. This tree planting is part of a national "green legacy" initiative to grow 4 billion trees in the country this summer, Ethiopia is doing this by encouraging every citizen to plant at least 40 seedlings. The project aims to undertake the effect of deforestation and climate change in the drought-prone country. According to the UN, Ethiopia’s forest coverage was just 4% in the 2000s, down from 35% a century earlier. Take a look yourself at this incredible initiative and let's hope that other countries will follow their example!

Sounds like a great plan and

Sounds like a great plan and a welcome initiative, but the numbers are somewhat surreal. 40 seedlings per person in means every family of on average 6 persons need to plant 240 trees. Most people live in urban areas and do not have access to an open space big enough to plant 240 trees. Also planting 29 million trees per hour (they probably don't plant trees in the dark) seems unlikely.

Hopefully the numbers will some day be reached and Ethiopia becomes a greaner country again, but I feel like Dr Getahun Mekuria needs to recount the planted trees and create a more likely target for the near future

Some news sites have now

Some news sites have now altered the number of planted trees from 350 million to 200 million and added that the number is 'unofficial'....
