Products & Services

Rescuing the turtles

  • The Oliver Ridley Project was founded in 2013 to protect the Oliver Ridley turtle. This turtle species largely resides in the Indian ocean around the Maldives. However, increasingly larger numbers were found entangled in fishing nets, which made the species endangered.
  • The goal of the organisation is to remove the discarded fishing nets from the ocean and care for the turtles which were harmed by them. In addition, they work to remove other kinds of waste from the ocean and educate people about the dangers of their waste to the sea turtles.
  • In 2017, the organisation opened the first Turtle Rescue facility in the Maldives, where wounded turtles can be treated and rehabilitated.

Volunteering projects

  • To support their work it is possible to volunteer at the Oliver Ridley Project. The organisation has several projects that welcome volunteers. It is for example possible to volunteer at a research project or a rehabilitation project.
  • The research project conducts research in a remote part of the Maldives to map the sea turtle population and changes in the population in that area. Since the location is remote, little scientific research has yet been conducted. The Oliver Ridley Project tries to fill the gap and so to increase knowledge on threats and conservation efforts to the sea turtle population.
  • At the Turtle Rescue Center volunteers can assist the veterinarian and help with marine conservation projects.
  • Volunteers are required to be 18+ and to be good swimmers. Besides, the organisation asks for a donation to cover the expenses and support their activities.
