Historische context

  • Europees perspectief Rise of the West, door oa minder intern conflict, geografisch gunstig, kapitalisme en liberalisme.

  • Mondiaal perspectief: Imperialisme, Europese dominantie en belang niet westerse ideeën en technologie 

 

Vrede van Westfalen: 1648, einde dertigjarige oorlog, ook einde 80 jarige oorlog in de vrede van Münster. Wordt vaak gezien als het begin van het Europese moderne statensysteem en de diplomatie. Hier werden nieuwe opvattingen over soevereiniteit kenbaar gemaakt. Landen zouden zich niet meer bezig gaan houden met interne problemen van anderen. Ook erkende dit verdrag de gelijkheid onder staten.

Stemmen tegen de Euroacademici

In juni 2005 werd een referendum gehouden over de Europese Grondwet. Opmerkelijk was dat de voor- en tegenstemmers niet onderverdeeld konden worden in ‘links’ en ‘rechts’. Het onderscheid werd gemaakt aan de hand van het opleidingsniveau. De hoogst opgeleide stemmers waren nipt tegen de Europese grondwet (51%), van de middelbaar opgeleiden was bijna 75% tegen en van de kiezers met een laag opleidingsniveau was 82% tegen de grondwet. De voorstemmers wonen in dure wijken en waren hoofdzakelijk aanhanger van D’66, VVD, CDA, Groenlinks of de PvdA. De tegenstemmers waren woonachtig op het platteland en stemden LPF, SP of Christen-Unie. Het referendum zorgde dus voor de openbaring van een breuklijn in ons land. Enerzijds staan de hoogopgeleide burgers en anderzijds staan de lager opgeleide burgers.

In the early 19th century, the French empire, led by Napoleon Bonaparte, attempted to conquer Europe. However, the combined coalition of the other European powers eventually lead to the defeat of France in 1815. After this return to the status quo, the Great Powers met in Vienna to discuss the establishment of a lasting peace in Europe. Law is prescriptive, law is both rules that regulate people’s behaviour as procedures to enforce these rules. Law is not always about morality and justice, you can for example carry a weapon by law, but still discuss the morality of it.

1. Thinking about International Politics

-In international Politics, similar events happen over and over again. Take as example refugees from North Africa, a recent political problem, and the refugees who fled in boats during the Vietnam War.

IRIO can be studied with two different approaches, the historical approach and the political science approach.

The historical approach focuses more on the question why things happened. It tries to understand events from the past and sticks to the facts.

The political (or social in general) science approach focuses on predicting to what extent certain events influence events today. It tries to see connections and with those connections, predict the future.
