Bijlage betreft een zeer handige afbeelding uit het boek. In hoofdstuk 2 hebben we gezien dat het volgroeien van het brein de verbeteringen in het werkgeheugen kan verklaren. Hoe verklaren we het toenemen van wiskundige kennis. Deze informatie is voornamelijk afkomstig uit casestudies. Zoals die van Daniel Tammet. Een jongen met Asperger met een zeer goed gevoel voor getallen. Hij associeert elk getal tot 10.000 met een visueel beeld of gevoel, ook deel- en vermenigvuldigsommen. Hij kan het antwoord geven tot in honderd decimalen precies. De meeste mensen zien niet zoals Daniël alles zo visueel of met gevoel, maar zien wel een getallenlijn. Psychologische studies tonen aan dat dit iets zegt over hoe de hersenen nummers representeert met behulp van een visueel, ruimtelijk beeld. Een van deze studies liet proefpersonen op een knop drukken wanneer het nummer (1-9) minder was (linker knop) dan 5 en met de andere hand als het meer was dan 5 (rechter knop). Het is een algemeen bekend fenomeen dat mensen sneller reageren op beelden in het linker visuele gebied met de linkerhand, en de idem dito voor rechts. Door dat wat in links gezien wordt, naar het rechter hersendeel gaat en rechts stuurt weer de linkerhand aan. Toch bleek dat ook wanneer het getal in het midden werd laten zien, de respondenten alsnog sneller op links waren bij lage getallen en sneller op rechts bij hogere getallen. De respondenten reageerde alsof de getallen alsnog rechts op links werden laten zien. Dit zou aan kunnen tonen dat we inderdaad getallen in ons hoofd op een getallenlijn zetten, waardoor de lagere getallen inderdaad links zijn.Verder blijkt dat de tijd die mensen nodig hebben om te reageren ook afhangt van hoe groot het verschil is. Mens reageert minder snel op 8 is lager dan 9, dan op 5 is lager dan 9. Terwijl een computer dit altijd in hetzelfde tempo zal doen. Ook dit zou te maken hebben met de mentale getallenlijn.
