Intro: life and experiences in Ethiopia

Ethiopia is a special country compared to other African countries. The country has mountain ranges, flat areas, vibrant natural parks and dry desert land. Also located in Ethiopia is Danakil, which is the hottest area in the world with volcanic activity resulting from friction between three tectonic plates. The people themselves prefer to call Ethiopia by the name Abyssinia. The country is mostly harmless and the people are one of the friendliest from the African continent.

Ethiopia plants 350 million trees in one day

The world record for planting the most trees in one day was held by India at 50 million trees, untill a few days ago when Ethiopia’s minister of innovation and technology, Dr Getahun Mekuria, tweeted the number of trees planted throughout the day: 353 million. This tree planting is part of a national "green legacy" initiative to grow 4 billion trees in the country this summer, Ethiopia is doing this by encouraging every citizen to plant at least 40 seedlings. The project aims to undertake the effect of deforestation and climate change in the drought-prone country.

1. Inleiding

I - Het land van de Nuer is tussen 1840 en 1881 door verschillende reizigers binnengedrongen, waaronder Werne, Arnaud en Thibaut. Ze kwamen het land voornamelijk binnen via de drie grote rivieren Bahr el Jebel (de Witte Nijl), Bahr el Ghazal en Sobat. Hun contact met de Nuer was echter miniem waardoor hun aantekeningen over het volk oppervlakkig bleven en soms zelfs vervalst. Het meest accurate verslag is van Jules Poncet, olifantenjager, die een aantal jaar op de grens van het Nuerland heeft doorgebracht.
