Dit artikel bevat de I3 theorie die de risicofactoren voor agressie op een rijtje zet en probeert te achterhalen welke processen ervoor zorgen dat een niet agressieve interactie escaleert naar een wel agressieve interactie. In dit artikel wordt er met agressie, al het gedrag met het doel om iemand fysiek pijn te doen die dit probeert te voorkomen, bedoeld.
Welke onderdelen heeft het General aggression model (GAM)?
Het general aggression model (GAM) is net als de I3 theorie een meta-analyse van alle theorieën die bestaan over het ontstaan van agressief gedrag. Het GAM heeft drie onderdelen:
risicofactoren voor agressie worden onderverdeeld in person-inputs en situation-inputs. Person-inputs bestaan uit persoonlijkheidseigenschappen, geslacht, geloofsovertuigingen, attitude en lange termijn doelen. Situation-inputs bestaan uit agressieve stimuli (bijvoorbeeld de aanwezigheid van wapens), provocatie, frustratie, pijn en drugs.
Cognitieve routes waardoor de inputs agressief gedrag beïnvloeden. Affectieve routes bestaan uit emoties en Opwindings-routes bestaan uit het versterken van de kans op een actie of bepaalde misattributie processen.
De uitkomsten van de beslissingsprocessen. Als mensen gemotiveerd zijn en genoeg buffer hebben om hun eerste gedachtes en ingevingen te veranderen of onderdrukken, zullen zij op een bedachtzame wijze op situaties reageren. Als mensen niet genoeg motivatie of buffer hebben zullen mensen impulsief reageren.
Welke fasen zijn er volgens de I3 theorie?
De I3 theorie bevat meer recent onderzoek dan het GAM. Het model focust zich op zelfregulatie en de manier waarop agressie risicofactoren agressief gedrag voorspellen. Fasen in de I3 theorie:
Instigating Triggers (Uitlokkende veroorzakers). Dit zijn situaties of omstandigheden die in het beginstadium de neiging tot fysieke agressie veroorzaken. Als er geen Instigating triggers aanwezig zijn, zijn impelling- en inhibitating forces irrelevant. Instigating triggers kunnen worden opgedeeld in twee categorieën: dyadische en derde partij uitlokkers. Dyadische uitlokkers gaan over gebeurtenissen of omstandigheden die een potentieel agressief persoon interpreteert als ontstaan door het doelwit (slachtoffer). Derde partij uitlokkers zijn gebeurtenissen of omstandigheden die niet door het doelwit zijn ontstaan. Iemand die niks met de omstandigheden te maken heeft wordt hier slachtoffer van geweld.
Impelling Forces (Aanmoedigende krachten). Dit zijn risicofactoren die de mate van de agressieve impuls bepalen. Impelling forces verhogen de kans dat iemand agressief zal reageren op een instigating trigger. Impelling forces kunnen worden opgedeeld in 4 categorieën: evolutionair en cultureel, persoonlijk, dyadisch en situationeel. Evolutionaire en culturele uitlokkers verwijzen naar biologische of culturele achtergrond, zoals iemands genen of sociale normen. Persoonlijke uitlokkers verwijzen naar stabiele persoonlijkheidseigenschappen van ene persoon. Dyadische uitlokkers verwijzen naar de eigenschappen van de relatie tussen een potentiele agressieve dader en het potentiële slachtoffer, zoals de machtsverhoudingen, en gevoelens van kwetsbaarheid. Situationele uitlokkers verwijzen naar de cognitieve ,affectieve of psychologische ervaringen die op dat moment actief zijn., zoals fysieke pijn oncomfortabele temperaturen of blootstelling aan gewelddadige media.
Inhibitating Forces (Onderdrukkende krachten). Dit zijn risicofactoren die bepalen of iemand zich zal overgeven aan de agressieve impulsen die zijn ontstaan door instigating triggers en impelling forces. Als de inhibitating forces sterk zijn zullen agressieve impulsen niet resulteren in agressief gedrag. Inhibitating forces bestaan wederom uit deze vier categorieën: evolutionair en cultureel, persoonlijk, dyadisch en situationeel.
Welke 7 effecten worden onderzocht met de I3 theorie?
De I3 theorie bespreekt 7 effecten:
Een hoofdeffect van instigating triggers. Een voorbeeld hiervan is sociale afwijzing. Mensen die veel sociale afwijzing ervaren zijn vaak agressiever.
Een hoofdeffect van impelling forces. Een voorbeeld hiervan is testosteron. Hoe hoger iemands testosteron levels, hoe meer agressief gedrag iemand laat zien. Dit geldt zowel voor vrouwen als voor mannen.
Een hoofdeffect van Inhibitating forces. Een voorbeeld hiervan is de mate van zelfregulatie. Mensen die al veel van hun zelfregulatie hebben moeten gebruiken, zullen hierna agressiever reageren.
Een interactie effect tussen Instigating triggers en Impelling forces Een voorbeeld hiervan is de samenhang tussen bedreiging van het ego en narcisisme. Mensen die een onstabiel zelfbeeld hebben zullen meer agressief gedrag laten zien als hun positieve zelfbeeld wordt bedreigd. De link tussen sociale afwijzing en geuitte agressie was sterker bij mensen die hoog scoorden op narcisme.
Een interactie effect tussen Instigating triggers en Inhibiting forces. Een voorbeeld hiervan is de samenhang tussen provocatie en mate van zelfregulatie. Mensen zijn vooral agressief als ze geprovoceerd worden en weinig controle over zichzelf hebben.
Een interactie effect tussen impelling forces en inhibiting forces. Een voorbeeld hiervan is de samenhang tussen een neiging fysiek te worden en negatieve uitkomst verwachtingen. Mensen die liever fysieke taken uitvoeren dan cognitieve laten alleen meer agressief gedrag zien als mensen denken dat agressief gedrag positieve uitkomsten zal hebben.
Een interactie effect tussen Instigating triggers, impelling factpors en inhibiting forces. Dit interactie effect is nog niet verder onderzocht.
Concluderend is de I3 theorie bedoeld om agressie risicofactoren te categoriseren in instigating triggers, impelling forces en inhibiting forces. I3 zou later gebruikt kunnen worden in het ontwerpen van interventies om mensen te helpen op een constructieve manier om te kunnen gaan met hun agressieve impulsen.
