Intro

Backpacking or travelling in Togo?

  • Togo, a narrow strip of land in West Africa that is easy to miss on the map - but that makes it all the more unique! Few travellers, beautiful beaches and many ethnic groups make Togo a real adventure for lovers of nature and African cultures.
  • Spotting activities: explore the mountains and forests of Kloto; visit the traditional houses of the Tamberma Valley; shop for handmade souvenirs at the Lomé Craft Market; learn about history and culture at the Togo National Museum; admire the architecture of Koutammakou; kayak on Lake Togo; go on Safari in Fazao-Malfakassa National Park; visit one of the voodoo markets and learn about ancient traditions; climb Mount Agou.
  • Spotting animals: baboons, elephants, hippos, crocodiles, antelopes, many birds, warthogs, turtles and much more.
  • Food spotting: fufu, grilled fish, koklo meme, gboma dessi, akpan, egusi soup, bissap.

Studying in Togo?

  • Steps are being taken to improve education and the possibilities are therefore getting better, but the country is not in the top 100 of world education. Interesting programs that you can follow there are for example agriculture, biology, architecture, computer science and nature management, but of course there is much more.
  • Study cities: Lomé, Kara.
  • Language: French, with possible English options.

Internships in Togo?

  • There are a number of internships possible, mainly through international organizations or universities.
  • Competencies: cultural insight, French language skills, flexibility, adaptability.

Volunteering in Togo?

  • Learn about sustainable agriculture, help in the education sector, contribute to ecotourism or even art and culture. It is all possible in Togo! There is also a lot of humanitarian work where you can make a real contribution. Working in Togo?
  • The country mainly relies on agriculture and mining. You may be able to find a job in these sectors, or in the development aid world.

Working as a digital nomad in Togo?

  • Little is known about the digital nomad life in Togo. However, we bet that it is a beautiful country if you want to experience a lot besides working and like some adventure and (infrastructure) challenges. The best place is probably Lomé because this city offers the most facilities.

Living in Togo?

  • Life can be a challenge, but that is made up for by the beautiful culture and people and the beautiful nature.
  • The rich culture, friendly population, cheap costs and undiscovered nature are attractions, only the facilities are limited, health care comes with major challenges and if you do not speak French you will not get very far.
  • Education: there are a few international schools in Lomé.
  • Safety: there is crime, especially if you seem rich, you can be a target. Cars are also sometimes hijacked. But don't let this stop you, just make sure you are aware of local advice!
  • Health insurance: although health care is free or not costly, the costs can increase because the quality leaves much to be desired. So make sure you have your own good health insurance.

Travel in Togo

  • A country in West Africa that is still relatively unknown to many travelers, but is so full of culture and history that it is an absolute must to visit. Enjoy the warm sun and the beautiful ocean, take a boat trip on Lake Togo, visit the old colonial villages and delve into the history of slavery or head north and see beautiful unique tatas (castle houses) of the Tamberna or experience the other special cultures and wild nature.
  • Lomé is the capital of Togo and has beautiful beaches, various markets, cozy restaurants, beautiful and interesting museums, and much more.
  • The Grand Marche in Lomé. At this large market you can buy everything you want, from food to clothing to accessories and art.
  • Aného: the Germans had assigned Aného as the first capital before Lomé was chosen as the capital. In Aného you can still see many colonial houses and that brings the former slave trade a little closer.
  • Tamberma valley is a village located further north in the country, close to the city of Kara. Tamberma valley is known for its typical houses with bright colours and unique shapes and its special culture. An absolute must!
  • Slave house of Togo: A short 45 minute drive from Lomé to Agbodrafo is an old slave house where slaves were kept and sold, and where slave owners lived. You can visit this historical place to gain a deeper understanding of the history of the country.
  • Be prepared of the crime(rate) in Togo. Robberies and violent assaults occur.
