Intro

Backpacking or traveling in Burundi?

  • Burundi, a small but beautiful country in the heart of Africa, has not yet been discovered by mass tourism, making it an authentic destination for adventurous backpackers. The country is known for its rolling hills, impressive lakes and vibrant culture. Although the infrastructure is not always developed, the warm hospitality of the locals and the unbeaten paths make it a unique travel experience.
  • Activity spotting: relax on the shores of Lake Tanganyika, one of the world's oldest lakes; spot chimpanzees in Kibira National Park; go on safari in Ruvubu National Park; admire Karera Falls; visit the historic point where Livingstone and Stanley, two famous explorers, met; climb Burundi's highest mountain, Mount Heha; explore lively Bujumbura; attend a Gishora Drum performance; explore the wetlands and hippos of Rusizi National Park; enjoy relaxation at Saga Beach.
  • Animal spotting: hippos, chimpanzees, buffalo, antelopes, flamingos, ospreys, pelicans, crocodiles, snakes, etc.
  • Food spotting: brochette (grilled meat or fish stick), isombe (stewed cassava leaves with peanut sauce), mukeke (type of fish), ibiharage (stewed beans), ubugali (hearty corn porridge), matoke (stewed bananas), igisafuriya (stew of vegetables and beans).

Studying in Burundi?

  • Burundi has a growing number of universities and colleges, with the University of Burundi in Bujumbura as the leading institution. The country does not rank high in international rankings, but there are quite a few programs to choose from.
  • Foreign students interested in social work, health care, or agriculture can gain valuable experiences in Burundi.
  • Study cities: Bujumbura, Gitega.
  • Language: education is mainly in French, with some programs in English.

Internship in Burundi?

  • Internships in Burundi offer valuable experience in development, education, health care, and agriculture. You can intern at NGOs, international organizations, or local businesses. You can also work in sustainable development.
  • Because of the country's infrastructure and development challenges, as an intern you can learn a lot about adaptability, project management, and cross-cultural collaboration.
  • Competencies: flexibility and resilience, project management in developing countries, intercultural communication and collaboration, French and Kirundi language skills, knowledge of development and agricultural practices.

Volunteer in Burundi?

  • There are many volunteering opportunities in Burundi, mainly focused on community development, health care, women's empowerment and education. For example, you can work with local communities, contribute to medical care, or help with educational projects in rural areas.
  • As one of the countries with the lowest life expectancy and happiness index, you can make a real difference here. Many international NGOs and local initiatives are looking for volunteers to make a positive impact.

Working in Burundi?

  • For foreigners, work opportunities are mainly with international organizations such as the UN, NGOs and the development sector. Most jobs are in the capital Bujumbura, although there is also work in rural areas in agriculture, marketing, health care, and infrastructure projects. French speakers have the most opportunities, but speaking Kirundi is highly valued.

Working as a digital nomad in Burundi?

  • It may not be the most conventional destination for digital nomads, but that's why it offers a unique and adventurous travel and work experience. In major cities, you will find co-working spaces and cafes with Internet access, but be prepared that the Internet is not always fast.
  • Favorite locations: Bujumbura, Kirundi.

Living in Burundi?

  • Living in Burundi offers a unique opportunity to be immersed in a rich culture. Moving to the country does require some preparation (both practical and mental). Expats usually live in Bujumbura, where access to international schools and hospitals is available. Also, the cost of living is generally very low.
  • There are some international schools in Bujumbura where children of expats can receive education in English or French.
  • Security: Burundi has experienced periods of political instability, and although it is relatively safe in the capital, travel to some parts of the country is not recommended. Expats should exercise caution and keep abreast of local news.
  • Language: it may be helpful to learn French or Kirundi to integrate more easily
  • Culture: Burundi's culture is diverse, with influences from the Germans and Belgians and of course especially a lot of local culture. You will find a lot of local art, music and festivals. Some customs include greeting each other with a handshake (right hand!) and bowing as a sign of respect, being on time and eating with your right hand.
  • Climate: tropical with moderate temperatures. The temperature varies depending on where you live. Furthermore, the country has two seasons - two rainy seasons per year and two dry seasons.
  • Health insurance: you can choose between public and private health care, with the former often not up to Western standards. It is important to make sure you have your own well-covered health insurance

Travel in Burundi

  • Burundi is a country located in Central Africa bordering Congo, Rwanda and Tanzania. Following the 2015 presidential election, there is a lot of unrest in the country to this day. Despite the political unrest, Burundi is a beautiful, hilly and mountainous country with a tropical climate. The official language is Kirundi, but French will also get you pretty far!

From language courses to gap year abroad, from work experience to volunteering abroad, from paid work to internship abroad, from mountaineering to diving and from backpacking to travel around the world

What social activities can you do abroad?

    • Opportunities are found in the areas of helping, learning or studying. You can get involved to volunteer in a social project at a school in Africa, Asia or Latin America. You can get involved in nature, in a project with animals or cleaning the sea or beaches. Those who want to learn more can choose for example a language course in Latin America, Spain or South Africa.

What work related activities can you do abroad?

    • If you want to gain work experience, and/or also earn money, go and work abroad. You can combine backpacking in Australia with temporary work. You can work on campsites in Europe or bush camps in Africa. You can pretty much go all over the world to work in the hospitality industry, hotels and hostels, in the healthcare sector or for example at a diving school.

What sports activities to do abroad?

    • Have you ever thought of mountain biking, rafting (going down a wild river on a raft or rubber dinghy, climbing or canoeing), survival (which involves building rafts, climbing or canoeing), abseiling (descending a rock face while secured to ropes), zip-lining (whizzing down a cable), canyoning (starting at the top of a river and then climbing, swimming, diving down the bed) or caving (scrambling, wriggling and crawling through caves and crevices)?
    • Maybe you feel more comfortable on a bodyboard (on a half-wave surfboard, you surf the high waves lying down-with flippers), on a hang glider or while paragliding (with a parachute you float down a mountain or dune), hydrospeeding (on a bodyboard with flippers and a wetsuit on you go down a wild river via rapids) or Tiefschneeskiing (racing down through powder snow)?
