  2. How do enterprise-wide information systems enable Amazon.com’s strategy?
  3. What benefits would an organization realize by running its enterprise resource planning system on Amazon.com’s Amazon Web Services (AWS) cloud computing infrastructure?

A company consist of the following five areas: MAMSH, Marketing, Accounting & finance, Manufacturing & operations, Supply chain management and Human resources.

Core activities consist of: MIMOC, Marketing & sales, Inbound logistics, Manufacturing & operations, Outbound logistics and Customer service.

Supporting activities consist of: IPATH, Infrastructure, Procurement, Administration, Technology development and Human recourses.

Business Process Management (BPM) consists of: DIUID, Development of a vision, Identifying key processes, Understanding & measuring existing processes, Identifying improvement and Designing & implementing the improvements.

Chapter 8: Strengthening business-to-business relationships via supply chain and customer relationship management

Consider the following when studying this chapter:

  1. How has Walmart used its supply chain management systems to lower costs and outperform other competition?
  2. How can Walmart use the retail data it gathers to improve activities involved in promoting and selling products to customers as well as providing customer service and nourishing long-term relationships?
  3. How can companies like Walmart benefit from combining their SCM and CRM systems into one integrated information system?

Bullwhip effect: a small fluctuation at the beginning of the supply chain, will ripple into a bigger fluctuation the further down the supply chain it gets.

Supply chain efficiency: to what extent the focus lies on minimizing procurement, transportation costs and production.

Supply chain effectiveness: to what extent the focus lies on maximizing customer service.

In this chapter, there are a lot of abbreviations (JIT, VMI, SCM, SCE, CRM, SFA, CSS, EMM), so to keep them apart:

  • Just -In-Time: ordering products “just in time”.
  • Vendor-Managed Inventory
  • Supply Chain Management
  • Supply Chain Execution: product flow, information flow and financial flow.
  • Customer Relationship Management
  • Sales Force Automation
  • Customer Service & Support
  • Enterprise Marketing Management

JIT and VMI are strategies to improve B2B from an inventory perspective. SCM and SCE help to improve B2B from a supply chain perspective. CRM helps improve B2B from a customer perspective, while using SFA, CSS and EMM. 

Chapter 9: Developing and acquiring information systems

Consider the following when studying this chapter:

  1. How can makers formulate and present the business case for selecting various hardware and software platforms?
  2. How can makers ensure that they successfully complete their development projects?
  3. How can makers decide which components to create themselves and which to obtain externally?

Productivity paradox: more investment à less effective communication à less productivity

The system development life cycle consists of: Planning & Selecting, Analysis, Design and Implementation & Operation, so PSADIO.

Acquisition involves: Planning & Selecting systems, Analysis, Development, Evaluation, Selecting a vendor, so PSADES

Chapter 10: securing information systems

Consider the following when studying this chapter:

  1. What is the difference between hacktivists, cyberterrorists and other computer criminals?
  2. What tools can hacktivists and other computer criminals use to conduct cyberwar or cyberterrorist attacks?
  3. How can organizations and individuals protect themselves from attacks by hacktivists and other computer criminals?

The difference between a cyberwar and cyberterrorism, is where it comes from: the government or individuals and organized groups.

IS protection is done with: ADIM, risk Assessment, Developing a safety strategy, Implementing control and training and Monitoring security.
