Wat zijn de elementen van herkenning?

Templates: je hebt mentale representaties van objecten in je hoofd. Wanneer je een object ziet, match je deze aan een template (template matching). De studie maar mentale rotatie geeft bewijs voor het bestaan van templates. Een tegenargument is het feit dat objecten zo ontzettend veel verschillende vormen hebben, dit zou betekenen dat je ook ontzettend veel templates in je hoofd moet hebben. Dit haalt het nut van een template weg. 

Features: een object opdelen in kleinere onderdelen. Hoe kan je een object opdelen --> Marr's theorie (primal, 2 1/2, 3-D). Een andere theorie die dit ondersteund is de theorie van Biederman (geons).

Werkt visuele perceptie bottom-up of top-down?

Constructivisme zegt top-down: we construeren onze waarneming op basis van stimuli en kennis van de wereld (Gregory) --> perception-for-recognition: we nemen dingen waar en vervolgens gaan we ze verwerken. 

Gibson zegt bottom-up: er is zoveel informatie in de externe wereld, je hoeft geen top-down informatie te hebben om de externe wereld te begrijpen. --> perception-for-action: we kunnen waarnemen (perceptie) zodat we kunnen interacteren met de wereld.
