Why is every success story you read or hear often wrong? - Chapter 19

The concept of a ‘narrative fallacy’ was introduced by Nassim Taleb and describes how flawed stories of the past influence our current views and future expectations. An explanation is considered more appealing if it’s concrete, assigns a significant role to talent, intentions or ignorance (instead of luck) and focuses on a few conspicuous events that happened than on numerous events that did not happen.

People are prone to interpret someone’s behavior as a reflection of personality traits and general propensities, which are easy to match to effects. The halo effect contributes to coherence: our judgement of one significant attribute influences how we view all qualities. If you consider a soccer player to be strong and attractive, you are likely to think of him as an excellent player as well. If you find him unattractive, you will probably underrate his soccer skills. The halo effect

This blog seems to have nothing to do with the Philippines, in a way it does and in a way it doesnt. To me this topic is very personal, which I learned to be, more personal, more me, in the Philippines. Voluntary Childlessness

ImageA question children get a lot at an early age, is what they want to become “when they grow up”. Let me just put aside for a minute the somewhat problematic assumption that a child isn’t already something to begin with.

Moral identity: what is it, how does it develop, and is it linked to moral action? - Hardy et al. - Universiteit Utrecht

Moral identity: what is it, how does it develop, and is it linked to moral action?

Hardy & Carlo

Kohlberg was convinced that mature moral reasoning would inherently motivate moral action. But several factors have led to a greater interest in looking beyond moral reasonings: 1) moral reasoning is only a modest predictor of moral action. 2) highly moral people don't necessarily have unusually sophisticated moral reasoning capacities. This article: what is moral identity? How does it develop? Is it linked to moral action?

What is moral identity?

Moral identity: the degree to which being a moral person is important to a person's identity. Perspectives:

  • Blasi's self-model

  • Links between moral judgment and action: before leading to moral action, a moral judgement can pass through a judgment of responsibility such that an action is seen not only as moral but also as something the individual is responsible

Book Summary of Consciousness: An Introduction - by Susan Blackwell

What is the problem of consciousness? - Chapter 1

What is the world made of?

The problem of consciousness is related to some of the oldest questions of philosophy: what does the world consist of? Who am I? It relates to the mind-body problem: what is the relationship between the physical and the mental?

Despite the fact that we are learning more and more about the functioning of the brain, consciousness remains a mystery. In the past, they used the term 'élan vital' to explain how non-living things could be made alive. Nowadays this concept is
