Intro

Backpacking or traveling in North Korea?

  • Traveling to North Korea does not come without challenges. Everyone needs a visa to visit the country and you can only visit as part of a group tour with an official guide. So a real insight into life in North Korea is not to be expected, but what they want you to see, you can experience. Be prepared for hefty costs, though!
  • Don't expect a fun vacation. It is a tour with many rules that are strictly enforced and your passport, for example, is taken away upon entry. You really have to abide by them, otherwise you risk being seen as a spy.
  • Spotting activities: where the tour organization takes you. Among others on the program are: Pyongyang, farms, an apple factory, etc.

Studying in North Korea?

  • It is possible to study in North Korea as a foreigner, although it is not easy to get in. For example, you must be able to speak Korean, have good grades and you stand a chance especially if you come from a friendly country. Also, there is little choice of studies for foreigners.
  • Study culture: you are strongly monitored as a foreign student.
  • Study city: Pyongyang.
  • Language of study: Korean.

Internship in North Korea?

  • Internships IN North Korea are almost impossible to find. However, you can intern outside of North Korea at organizations with a focus on North Korea.

Volunteering in North Korea?

  • Volunteering is available through tour organizations. It is very limited and mainly takes place in agriculture.

Working in North Korea?

  • Most foreigners working in North Korea are employed in diplomatic missions, humanitarian aid or university research and teaching. So you will only find a job in quite specific circumstances.

Living in North Korea?

  • Do you get to live in North Korea? Then expect a life with lots of rules and control. Contact with locals is not appreciated, taking photos is best left alone and many places you won't enter.
  • Health insurance: basic care is okay, but for more serious help, health care is probably not enough. So get your own well-covered health insurance.

Travel in North-Korea?

  • North Korea is mainly known for its huge military parades, threats with nuclear weapons and the Korean War. We don't really know much more about the country, because there is no country more mysterious and closed than North Korea. Few tourists are allowed in each year, and the tourists who are allowed in have to go on an organized tour. But: then you really make a unique trip that few people will imitate.
