Intergroepsconflict in Lord of the Flies
Er zijn meerdere symptomen voor het groeiende intergroepsconflict in Lord of the Flies. Eén van die symptomen is wederkerigheid. Groepsleden hebben de neiging om te doen wat hen ook wordt aangedaan, zoals beledigen of dreigen. Ralph en Jack willen allebei de leiding krijgen over de groep, waardoor ze tegenover elkaar komen te staan. Als de één de ander bedreigt of beledigt, gaat de ander hierop in door dat ook te doen.
Een ander symptoom is het bevoordelen van leden van de eigen groep. Hierbij heeft men de neiging om leden van de eigen groep te bevoordelen en voor te trekken. Dit is in Lord of the Flies terug te zien als Jack zijn jagers wel vlees geeft, terwijl hij de jongere kinderen minder of geen vlees geeft.
Een derde symptoom is buitensluiting. Hierbij heeft de groep de neiging om individuen die niet bij hun groep horen, of wel in de groep zitten maar er niet bij passen, af te wijzen. Dit is in het verhaal terug te zien dat Jack wordt buitengesloten van het maken van beslissingen. Hierbij is ook de wederkerigheid weer terug te zien, aangezien Jack hierop reageert door Ralph niet meer te laten deelnemen aan het maken van beslissingen over het vlees.
Een vierde symptoom is intergroepexplotatie. Hierbij is er een groep die de andere groep wil domineren. De andere groep die gedomineerd wordt heeft dan vaak te neiging om zich te verzetten. In Lord of the Flies zijn Jack en de jagers het niet eens met het beleid van Ralph en proberen daarom zijn groep onder hun gezag te krijgen. Ralph en zijn groep verzetten zich hiertegen.
Een laatste symptoom is iemand uitkiezen als zondebok. Hierbij wordt er iemand in de groep gezien als degene die de schuld heeft van alle vervelende dingen die gebeuren. In Lord of the Flies wordt Biggie vooral gezien als zondebok. Waarschijnlijk komt dit omdat Biggie er anders uitziet dan de rest en omdat hij anders denkt dan de andere jongens. Dit zorgt ervoor dat Biggie een makkelijk doelwit is om op af te reageren als dingen niet helemaal positief verlopen. Vooral Jack heeft het gemunt op Biggie en omdat Jack best wat volgers heeft, gaan die Biggie ook als zondebok zien.
