Introductie

Om zwangerschap te voorkomen, gebruiken zeer veel vrouwen orale anticonceptiepillen. Deze pillen bevatten een synthetische vorm van de hormonen oestradiol en progesteron. Vrouwen beginnen vaak al vroeg in het leven met het nemen van de pillen. De pillen kunnen echter effecten hebben op het sociaal-emotioneel gedrag en het functioneren van de hersenen.

De Stimulans-drug Methylfenidaat (MPH) is het meest voorgeschreven om te helpen met ADHD. Maar, sinds veel mensen geloven dat het cognitieve functies versterkt, wordt MPH steeds vaker gebruikt in de gezonde populatie. Bij deze trend komen er natuurlijk ethische en gezondheidskwesties kijken, maar een andere belangrijke vraag is of MPH echt cognitie verbetert in gezonde mensen. Hier is nog geen definitief antwoord op, sinds de vele studies op dit onderwerp niet makkelijk vergeleken worden en soms zelfs tegenstrijdige resultaten opleveren. Dit samengevatte artikel geeft een overzicht en analyse van deze studies, waarbij een categorisatie-systeem gebruikt wordt voor betere vergelijking.
