Understanding violent extremism in the Sahel

Birgitta Tazelaar, Deputy Director General for International Cooperation for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA), will deliver an opening address on current priorities and challenges for peacebuilding and international development. 

This will be followed by a panel discussion to understand the rise of violent extremism in the central Sahel. We will hear from peacebuilders and civil society experts to understand the rise of violent extremism in the central Sahel and the main factors behind some young people’s decision to join armed groups and how this can be prevented. The floor will then be opened for questions from the audience.
