Temple of Heaven

On a day off I decided to see some more of what China had to offer. I scanned my 'to do astonishing things in Beijing' list and after some doubting I picked the Temple of Heaven  in Southern Beijing (ranked 4th in the Lonely Planet).

Over 600 years ago, during the Ming and Qin dynasties, the temple served as a place for offers and ceremonies. Emperors used to come here to  pray for a good harvest. It took a full 14 years to build this beauty  and was completed in 1420. All over circles (symbol of heaven) and squares (representing earth) are to be found.

Wandering around the whopping 274 hectare complex (equalling 548 football fields), I bumped into a crowd of singing people (see video). I didn't know what they were singing about nor why, but it definitely contributed to the enigmatic atmosphere.  On all sides of the temple locals were busy practicing calligraphy, tai chi or kiting.

Once back in my apartment I crossed the activity from the list. Let's see what's next! This visit was surely a memorable one.
