Mentaliseren, ook wel mentalization genoemd, is het vermogen om de mentale toestanden van zichzelf en anderen te begrijpen. Dit omvat gedachten, gevoelens, behoeften, verlangens, doelen, motieven en overtuigingen. Mentaliseren stelt ons in staat om de complexe innerlijke wereld van mensen te begrijpen en ons eigen gedrag in die context te plaatsen.
Wat zijn de belangrijkste kenmerken van mentalizing?
- Attributie van mentale toestanden: Mentaliseren omvat het toekennen van mentale toestanden aan anderen, zoals gedachten, gevoelens en intenties. We kunnen ons afvragen: "Wat denkt hij nu?", "Waarom voelt ze zich zo?", "Wat wil hij hiermee bereiken?".
- Inzicht in perspectief: Mentaliseren stelt ons in staat om de wereld vanuit het perspectief van anderen te zien. We kunnen ons afvragen: "Hoe zou ik me voelen als ik in zijn schoenen stond?", "Hoe zou zij deze situatie interpreteren?".
- Reflectie op eigen mentale toestanden: Mentaliseren omvat ook reflectie op onze eigen mentale toestanden. We kunnen ons afvragen: "Wat denk ik nu eigenlijk?", "Waarom voel ik me zo?", "Wat zijn mijn motieven in deze situatie?".
Waarom is mentaliseren belangrijk?
Mentaliseren is belangrijk om verschillende redenen:
- Sociale relaties: Mentaliseren is essentieel voor gezonde sociale relaties. Het stelt ons in staat om met elkaar in contact te komen, conflicten op te lossen en empathie te tonen.
- Emotionele regulatie: Mentaliseren helpt ons om onze eigen emoties te reguleren door onze gevoelens te begrijpen en gezonde coping-mechanismen te ontwikkelen.
- Mentale gezondheid: Mentaliseren speelt een belangrijke rol in de mentale gezondheid. Mensen met een goed vermogen tot mentaliseren zijn minder vatbaar voor psychische aandoeningen zoals angst en depressie.
- Persoonlijke ontwikkeling: Mentaliseren bevordert persoonlijke ontwikkeling door ons in staat te stellen om te leren van onze ervaringen en onszelf te verbeteren.
Hoe wordt mentaliseren in de praktijk toegepast?
Mentaliseren wordt op verschillende manieren in de praktijk toegepast, bijvoorbeeld:
- Psychotherapie: Mentalization-Based Therapy (MBT) is een effectieve therapie voor de behandeling van borderline-persoonlijkheidsstoornis (BPS). MBT leert cliënten om hun eigen en andermans mentale toestanden te begrijpen.
- Opvoeding: Ouders kunnen hun kinderen leren om te mentaliseren door hun eigen gedachten en gevoelens te bespreken en door hen aan te moedigen om zich te verplaatsen in de schoenen van anderen.
- Onderwijs: Leerkrachten kunnen mentaliseren in de klas bevorderen door discussies te stimuleren over perspectief, empathie en emoties.
Praktijkvoorbeeld
Een ouder praat met zijn kind over een conflict met een vriendje. De ouder helpt het kind om de gevoelens van het vriendje te begrijpen en om te zien hoe zijn eigen gedrag de situatie heeft beïnvloed. De ouder moedigt het kind aan om zich te verontschuldigen voor zijn of haar gedrag en om te bedenken hoe het conflict in de toekomst opgelost kan worden.
Kritische kanttekeningen
- Complexiteit: Mentaliseren is een complex proces dat kan worden beïnvloed door verschillende factoren, zoals emoties, vooroordelen en trauma's.
- Ontwikkeling: Het vermogen tot mentaliseren ontwikkelt zich gedurende de kindertijd en adolescentie. Sommige mensen hebben meer moeite met mentaliseren dan anderen.
- Culturele invloeden: Mentaliseren kan worden beïnvloed door culturele normen en waarden. In sommige culturen wordt het als onbeleefd beschouwd om te veel over de mentale toestanden van anderen na te denken.

- Starting Pages: for some fields of study and some university curricula editors have created (start) magazines where customised selections of summaries are put together to smoothen navigation. When you have found a magazine of your likings, add that page to your favorites so you can easily go to that starting point directly from your profile during future visits. Below you will find some start magazines per field of study
- Use the menu above every page to go to one of the main starting pages
- Tags & Taxonomy: gives you insight in the amount of summaries that are tagged by authors on specific subjects. This type of navigation can help find summaries that you could have missed when just using the search tools. Tags are organised per field of study and per study institution.
