Intro

Backpacking or traveling in Kyrgyzstan?

  • Kyrgyzstan is one of the best destinations in Central Asia for backpackers, thanks to its breathtaking nature, friendly people, and affordable costs. You can trek through the Tian Shan Mountains, visit the Issyk-Kul and Son-Kul lakes, and visit traditional yurts to experience nomadic culture. The country is still relatively untouched by mass tourism, keeping it an adventurous destination.
  • Activity spotting: bladder in the Altyn Arashan hot springs; explore the ecotourism and beaches of Issyk-Kul Lake; visit the ancient Silk Road building Tash Rabat; sleep a night in a yurt; try horseback riding; trek to Ala-Kul; admire the various nomadic sports; go to an eagle hunting demonstration; visit the highest lake in Kyrgyzstan, Song Kul; eat the local food (less easy if you're vega...); visit a local market.
  • Animal spotting: snow leopard, Marco Polo sheep, ibex, maral, eagle, wolves, Argali sheep, brown bear.
  • Food spotting: manty (dumplings), shashlik (kebab), shorpo (cooked meat), beshbarmak (cooked meat with noodles), plov (rice dish), samsa (stuffed pastries), kumis (fermented horse milk), boorsok (fried bread).

Studying in Kyrgyzstan?

  • Kyrgyzstan offers study opportunities for international students, especially in the fields of medicine and technical studies. Well-known universities such as the American University of Central Asia (AUCA) in Bishkek attract students from all over the world. Studying in Kyrgyzstan offers the opportunity to learn in a multicultural environment, with a focus on the development of Central Asia.
  • Study cities: Bishkek, Osh.
  • Language: The language of instruction can vary, but English, Russian and Kyrgyz are commonly used.

Internship in Kyrgyzstan?

  • There are opportunities for internships in Kyrgyzstan with NGOs, international organizations and companies or even local businesses, among others. Consider internships in the fields of development, education and environment!
  • Competencies: flexibility and adaptability, project management, intercultural communication, English, Russian and Kyrgyz language skills, problem solving skills.

Volunteer in Kyrgyzstan?

  • Kyrgyzstan offers many volunteering options. At organizations, you can work in education, community development, conservation, and relief work. Many projects focus on supporting nomadic communities or improving infrastructure in rural areas. There are also many private individuals who offer volunteer work. For example, you can work in hostels, help with organizations in arts education, and organizations focused on climate change and ecotourism.

Working in Kyrgyzstan?

  • Most jobs are located in Bishkek, the capital, where international companies and organizations have their offices. There is also a growing market for entrepreneurs and startups. It is not easy to find a job outside the big city. Foreigners work mostly in mining, medical, development, education, and international organizations. English teachers and development cooperation specialists are often sought after.
  • Just make sure you speak Kyrgyz or Russian.

Working as a digital nomad in Kyrgyzstan?

  • Although Kyrgyzstan is not as well known among digital nomads as other Asian countries, the country does offer an inexpensive and peaceful environment to work remotely. Bishkek has reliable Internet connections and some co-working spaces.
  • The low cost of living and beautiful surroundings make it an attractive option for digital nomads who want to work and explore nature at the same time.
  • Favorite locations: Bishkek, Osh.

Living in Kyrgyzstan?

  • A country rich in culture, history and natural beauty. That makes it particularly attractive to expats, although you won't find very many.
  • It is relatively safe, cheap and the food is delicious. There are also modern amenities, which makes adjusting a little easier. This applies to the cities, in the countryside it's a different story!
  • There are limited options for private and international schools. You will find these particularly in the capital city of Bishkek.
  • Language: it is important to speak Kyrgyz or Russian.
  • Health insurance: the hospitals are not of the standard we are used to, so it is important to have a good health insurance that also covers care at private clinics. So make sure you have your own well-covered health insurance.

Travel in Kyrgyztan?

  • Snow-capped mountain ridges, high passes, wild rivers and barren plateaus literally and figuratively take your breath away (almost the entire country is above 1,000 meters). Kyrgyzstan's nature reserves are home to 20,000 species of animals (or 8% of the world's population), many of which are very rare. The biosphere reserve at Lake Issy-Kul, which is the second largest mountain lake in the world, is almost as big as Switzerland.

From language courses to gap year abroad, from work experience to volunteering abroad, from paid work to internship abroad, from mountaineering to diving and from backpacking to travel around the world

What social activities can you do abroad?

    • Opportunities are found in the areas of helping, learning or studying. You can get involved to volunteer in a social project at a school in Africa, Asia or Latin America. You can get involved in nature, in a project with animals or cleaning the sea or beaches. Those who want to learn more can choose for example a language course in Latin America, Spain or South Africa.

What work related activities can you do abroad?

    • If you want to gain work experience, and/or also earn money, go and work abroad. You can combine backpacking in Australia with temporary work. You can work on campsites in Europe or bush camps in Africa. You can pretty much go all over the world to work in the hospitality industry, hotels and hostels, in the healthcare sector or for example at a diving school.

What sports activities to do abroad?

    • Have you ever thought of mountain biking, rafting (going down a wild river on a raft or rubber dinghy, climbing or canoeing), survival (which involves building rafts, climbing or canoeing), abseiling (descending a rock face while secured to ropes), zip-lining (whizzing down a cable), canyoning (starting at the top of a river and then climbing, swimming, diving down the bed) or caving (scrambling, wriggling and crawling through caves and crevices)?
    • Maybe you feel more comfortable on a bodyboard (on a half-wave surfboard, you surf the high waves lying down-with flippers), on a hang glider or while paragliding (with a parachute you float down a mountain or dune), hydrospeeding (on a bodyboard with flippers and a wetsuit on you go down a wild river via rapids) or Tiefschneeskiing (racing down through powder snow)?
