Een factor-analyse is op diverse vlakken anders dan de eerder besproken analyses. Een factor-analyse is namelijk niet ontworpen om hypothesen te testen of om te onderzoeken of een groep significant verschilt van een andere groep. Factor-analyse is een zogenaamde ‘data-reductie techniek’. Het neemt een groot aantal variabelen en kijkt of de data kan worden gereduceerd in een kleinere set factoren of componenten. Er bestaan diverse soorten factor-analyses die in de volgende hoofdstukken worden besproken.
