Zoals je weet wordt er veel onderzoek gedaan naar jongeren die genegeerd worden door leeftijdsgenoten, of zelfs gepest worden. Er is echter weinig onderzoek naar hoe het komt dat sommige jongeren wél populair zijn. Dit onderzoek gaat hierover.
Het lastige van dit onderzoek is dat de zogenoemde high-status kinderen geen uniforme groep zijn, de profielen van de kinderen zijn verschillend. Je kan denken aan een jongere die anderen helpt, voor iedereen aardig is. Dit wordt ook wel sociometrically popular (SP) genoemd. Deze jongeren hebben veel prosociaal gedrag en een laag niveau van agressie. Een manier om dit te meten is wanneer deelnemers moeten aangeven wie ze het meest leuk vinden en wie niet. Deze score maakt iemand sociometrically popular. Een andere jongere is iemand die veel genoemd wordt, maar niet iedereen kent hem echt. Men volgt hem in kleding muziek en zou willen dat hij of zij beter bevriend met hem of haar was. Deze jongere kan goed manipuleren. Dit wordt ook wel perceived popular (PP) genoemd. Een manier om dit te meten is door personen te positioneren van populair tot niet populair. In wetenschappelijk onderzoek wordt pas sinds 5-10 jaar de laatste categorie jongeren onderzocht.
In dit artikel gaat het hierbij vooral over de perceived popular youth, waarbij vergeleken wordt met de sociometrically popular jongere. Er wordt allereerst gekeken naar a) de concepten (zoals hierboven beschreven) en het meten van beide soorten populariteit (zoals hierboven beschreven), b) het sociale gedrag van beide soorten populariteit en c) de uitkomsten voor beide groepen.
Ad a) Het is interressant om te zien dat pas sinds kort er onderzoek is gedaan naar wat jongeren eigenlijk definiëren als populair. Jongeren associëren populair met een mix van pro-sociaal en antisociaal gedrag.
Ad b) Hoewel er overeenkomsten zijn tussen beide profielen, bijvoorbeeld dat beide typen worden gezien als pro-sociaal, zijn er ook verschillen. Zo is er bij SP minder agressie waargenomen, terwijl er bij PP een hogere mate van agressie is waargenomen, zowel overt en relationele agressie. Relationele agressie is erop gericht om relaties kapot te maken, door middel van bijvoorbeeld negeren of iemand buitensluiten. Het lijkt erop dat de PP jongeren deze agressie gebruiken voor hun eigen voordeel en voor hun eigen populariteit, maar vooral voor sociale macht, bijvoorbeeld door iemand te intimideren. Overt agressie is erop gericht om populariteit te bereiken, omdat ze op deze manier dominantie kunnen laten zien.
Een kanttekening hierbij moet wel zijn dat de mate van agressie, en de relatie tussen agressie en PP varieert per leeftijd en geslacht. Hier hebben ze een tabel van gemaakt, zie pag. 104. Zo komt PP nauwelijks voor bij 9-11 jarige kinderen, maar wel bij 12-15 jarigen.
Er is ook een onderzoek gedaan, waaruit blijkt dat de relatie tussen relationele agressie en PP sterker is dan voor jongens, zie pag. 104.
Ad c) SP jongeren hebben een over het algemeen een goede sociaal-emotionele ontwikkeling, dit voorspelt ook positieve aanpassingen voor de toekomst. Over de aanpassingen van PP jongeren is minder bekend en ook dubbel. Aan de ene kant gaat agressie vaak samen met gedragsproblemen, maar aan de andere kant kan populariteit ook leiden tot positieve aanpassing. De uitkomst van dit onderzoek is dan ook dat waarschijnlijk de korte-termijn voordelen gecombineerd kunnen worden met de lange-termijn voordelen. Voor deze PP jongeren zijn er twee scenario: of een continuïteit van de populariteit, zodat ze kunnen werken op leiderschapsposten in het leven, zowel sociaal als qua werk. Of verplaatst worden naar nieuwe sociale contexten waardoor ze niet meer sociaal gezien centraal staan en te maken hebben met nieuwe structuren.
Van belang is, om naast alle negatieve consequenties van agressie, ook te kijken naar het feit dat agressie soms leidt tot een hoge status in de vorm van PP. En nog belangrijker: zijn ze hiermee op het positieve of negatieve spoor? Ook lange-termijn gevolgen zijn hierbij van belang.
