Backpacking or travelling in Hungary?

  • Hungary - the country of one of the most famous festivals in Europe, thermal baths, peppers and a unique language. The country is centrally located in Europe and has something for everyone: lively cities, countryside with castles, hot springs and beautiful walks. Travelling here is an exciting experience, with good prices also for the backpacker, and a good public transport system.
  • Activity spotting: explore beautiful Budapest; relax in the thermal baths; hike in the Bükk Mountains; cycle around Lake Balaton; taste wine in Tokaj; visit historic castles such as Visegrád, Eger and Buda; roam the Hungarian Puszta, a unique steppe area with wild horses and rare birds; visit the village of Hollókő; canoe on Lake Tisza; party until late at festivals such as Sziget and Balaton Sound.
  • Animal spotting: wild horses, foxes, deer, mouflon, boar.
  • Food Spotting: Goulash, Lángos, Pörkölt, Paprikás Csirke, Hortobágyi Palacsinta, Túrós Csusza, Esterházy Cake, Tokaji Wine.

Study in Hungary?

  • Hungary offers affordable and high-quality English-language education, making it increasingly popular among international students. Hungarian universities are particularly well-known for medical, engineering and music studies, and there is a great deal of cultural diversity on campuses.
  • Study cities: Budapest, Szeged, Debrecen.
  • Language: Generally Hungarian, but English-language programmes are available.

Internships in Hungary?

  • Internships in Hungary offer opportunities in various sectors, such as IT, education, hospitality and cultural management. Budapest in particular has a thriving startup scene, and there are also opportunities in international organisations.
  • Competencies: Intercultural communication skills, innovation and creativity, management skills, technical skills.

Volunteering in Hungary?

  • There are several opportunities in Hungary. You can work in English language exchange and education, in the cultural sector (for example restoring historical monuments), at summer camps, in nature conservation or even as a volunteer in a zoo.

Working in Hungary?

  • Hungary offers interesting opportunities for expats, especially in IT, education, customer service and hospitality. The country has a relatively low cost of living, and working in Budapest is popular among expats because of the mix of culture and affordability.
  • In winter and summer you may be able to work in the hospitality industry in tourist areas.
  • Working as a digital nomad in Hungary?
  • Budapest is a popular European destination for digital nomads thanks to its relatively low costs, fast wifi and vibrant culture.
  • Favorite locations: Budapest, especially the Erzsébetváros and Terézváros districts.

Living in Hungary?

  • Living in Hungary is relatively cheap compared to other European countries. Budapest offers a cosmopolitan lifestyle with restaurants, cultural activities, and nightlife. Outside of the capital, housing costs are even lower, and you’ll find plenty of nature and tranquility.
  • Education: There are international schools in Budapest that teach in English or German, making it a great destination for families. The Hungarian education system has a good reputation and is focused on academic achievement.
  • Expat community: Budapest has a vibrant expat community, with events, meetups, and online networks where you can meet other internationals. Outside of the capital, expats are rarer, but the community in Budapest is very active.
  • Safety: It’s generally safe with little crime, but beware of pickpockets in crowded areas.
  • Culture: Hungary has a rich culture with strong influences from Turkish, Austrian, and communist history. Hungarians are proud of their heritage, and you can enjoy music, literature, and traditional festivals such as the Wine Festival and the National Day on August 20.
  • Please note: speaking Hungarian is very useful (and not easy) if you want to move outside Budapest, winters can be cold, administrative processes can take some time.
  • Health insurance: accessible and generally of good quality, especially in the cities. Expats often choose private healthcare. So make sure you have your own good health insurance.

Hungary: Updates & Travel

Travel in Hungary?

  • Hungary is a country that is different from it's neighbours. The inhabitants are not Slavic but Magyar (a tribe from Central Asia), the country does not have high mountains like Austria but vast plains and Budapest is perhaps the most beautiful capital of Europe. The largest freshwater lake, Lake Balaton, is also definitely worth a visit.
  • Climb the citadel hill on the Buda side of the Danube in the evening. From here you have a beautiful view of the city and all the lights in the evening.
  • Visit one of the typical Hungarian thermal baths. The most famous is Sezchenyi in Budapest, where tourists and locals take a bath in medicinal water that smells like rotten eggs. Fortunately, there are also warm baths with chlorine outside, which is really recommended in the winter!
  • Go horseback riding on the Puszta, the Hungarian steppe. Avoid (unless you are a huge bird lover) the Hortobágy National Park, it clearly did not make it onto the UNESCO World Heritage List for its natural beauty.
  • Visit an Opera in Budapest, the tickets are cheap, you can easily get a great spot for a small amount and even if you are not a fan of opera it is definitely worth it to see this beautiful building from the inside.
  • Visit Budapest, is not to be missed, not only because all roads in Hungary lead to Budapest. Beautiful architecture, nice restaurants, the castle hill in Buda, Margit Sziget (the city island) and the thermal baths.
  • Eger: A place with nice colored houses, a beautiful castle from which you can also look far, a yellow basilica and the northernmost minaret in Europe that was built by the Moors.
  • Lake Balaton: The place where Hungarians (and Germans and Russians) spend their weekend in the summer. Lying in the sun, swimming or renting a boat and especially studying the locals.
  • Be aware that Hungarian is a Finno-Ugric language and can hardly be traced back to anything that would sound familiar to any of us.

From language courses to gap year abroad, from work experience to volunteering abroad, from paid work to internship abroad, from mountaineering to diving and from backpacking to travel around the world

What social activities can you do abroad?

    • Opportunities are found in the areas of helping, learning or studying. You can get involved to volunteer in a social project at a school in Africa, Asia or Latin America. You can get involved in nature, in a project with animals or cleaning the sea or beaches. Those who want to learn more can choose for example a language course in Latin America, Spain or South Africa.

What work related activities can you do abroad?

    • If you want to gain work experience, and/or also earn money, go and work abroad. You can combine backpacking in Australia with temporary work. You can work on campsites in Europe or bush camps in Africa. You can pretty much go all over the world to work in the hospitality industry, hotels and hostels, in the healthcare sector or for example at a diving school.

What sports activities to do abroad?

    • Have you ever thought of mountain biking, rafting (going down a wild river on a raft or rubber dinghy, climbing or canoeing), survival (which involves building rafts, climbing or canoeing), abseiling (descending a rock face while secured to ropes), zip-lining (whizzing down a cable), canyoning (starting at the top of a river and then climbing, swimming, diving down the bed) or caving (scrambling, wriggling and crawling through caves and crevices)?
    • Maybe you feel more comfortable on a bodyboard (on a half-wave surfboard, you surf the high waves lying down-with flippers), on a hang glider or while paragliding (with a parachute you float down a mountain or dune), hydrospeeding (on a bodyboard with flippers and a wetsuit on you go down a wild river via rapids) or Tiefschneeskiing (racing down through powder snow)?
