Intro

Backpacking or travelling in Mauritius?

  • Mauritius is a paradise for travellers who love beaches, green mountains and a mix of cultures. From relaxing on white sandy beaches to snorkelling at colourful coral reefs, the island offers tropical charm and a rich history.
  • Activities to spot: snorkel and dive at Blue Bay Marine Park; hike in the Black River Gorges National Park; admire the colourful Chamarel sand dunes; explore the markets of Port Louis; spot dolphins at Tamarin Bay; visit the Pamplemousses Botanical Gardens; climb rocks at Pieter Both and go for a walk on one of the beautiful rum estates.
  • Animals to spot: fruit bats, geckos, dolphins, lionfish, sea turtles, chameleons, octopuses and the rare Mauritius kestrel.
  • Food to spot: dholl puri, vindaye, roti, gateaux piment, mine frites, rougaille, alouda, biryani, samosas.

Studying in Mauritius?

  • There are quite a few reasonably good higher education institutions and study programmes to choose from, so if you want to enjoy tropical island life and also study a fun course, Mauritius is the place to be! Some popular study programmes include medicine, business, engineering and computer science, but you can also learn about local marine biology, for example.
  • Study cities: Port Louis, Moka, Vacoas, among others.
  • Language: English.

Internships in Mauritius?

  • Think about internships in tourism, sustainability or marine and maritime studies.
  • Competencies: expect plenty of opportunities for experience in intercultural communication, hospitality and island life.

Volunteering in Mauritius?

  • There are many volunteer projects to be found in Mauritius. Think about projects in the field of coral reef protection, nature conservation, sustainable agriculture, stray animal shelters and social development.

Working in Mauritius?

  • Popular sectors include tourism, IT and fintech, education (particularly English and French) and nature conservation and sustainability.

Working as a digital nomad in Mauritius?

  • Well, you have certainly found a popular destination here and for good reason. Mauritius offers excellent internet, beaches as work locations and multiple co-working spaces. Perfect for digital nomads who want to relax during the working day.

Living in Mauritius?

  • Life in Mauritius is relaxed, with lots of nature and an open, multicultural society. Expats often live in cities like Grand Baie and Moka because of the amenities.
  • Why yes, why not? It is living in a tropical paradise with a high quality of life and easy access to nature, but you live far from the rest of the world, career opportunities are limited and the island can feel small after a while.
  • Climate: the island has a tropical climate with a dry, warm winter (May-October) and a wet, warm summer (November-April), with a chance of cyclones.
  • Mauritius is safe, and the healthcare is good with modern facilities, especially in the private circuit.
  • Health insurance: costs can add up, so make sure you have good health insurance.

Travel in Mauritius

  • This country is located 1,800 kilometers southeast of Mozambique and consists of several islands, including uninhabited miniature islands. The island of Mauritius is the most famous, but travelers also regularly go to the remote and quiet island of Rodrigues, which can only be reached by plane from Mauritius. The island of Mauritius not only has beautiful white beaches and a clear ocean, but also a special culture, Hindu temples and mountain areas with waterfalls and colored hills.
  • The Blue Penny Museum is worth visiting and located in Port Louis and is the art and history museum of Mauritius.
  • Ziplining: In the south of the island of Mauritius you can zipline over the natural forest areas, banana and sugar cane plantations, waterfalls and rivers.
  • Check out the beaches. Due to natural influences such as: strong currents, strong winds, high waves or a lot of coral, the beaches are used for various activities (including sunbathing, windsurfing, kitesurfing and snorkeling). JoHotspots in Mauritius
  • Port Louis is the capital of Mauritius and a great place to spend a day (or two). For example, go shopping in the local shops, visit the central market, a mosque, a temple or a museum.
  • Chamarel is a village in the southwest of the island Mauritius is known for its hills with unexpected colors due to the mix of volcanic rock and natural minerals from the ground.
  • It is possible to walk with lions. This is the name of a popular attraction in Mauritius. Here visitors are allowed to walk and have their picture taken with lions in captivity.

From language courses to gap year abroad, from work experience to volunteering abroad, from paid work to internship abroad, from mountaineering to diving and from backpacking to travel around the world

What social activities can you do abroad?

    • Opportunities are found in the areas of helping, learning or studying. You can get involved to volunteer in a social project at a school in Africa, Asia or Latin America. You can get involved in nature, in a project with animals or cleaning the sea or beaches. Those who want to learn more can choose for example a language course in Latin America, Spain or South Africa.

What work related activities can you do abroad?

    • If you want to gain work experience, and/or also earn money, go and work abroad. You can combine backpacking in Australia with temporary work. You can work on campsites in Europe or bush camps in Africa. You can pretty much go all over the world to work in the hospitality industry, hotels and hostels, in the healthcare sector or for example at a diving school.

What sports activities to do abroad?

    • Have you ever thought of mountain biking, rafting (going down a wild river on a raft or rubber dinghy, climbing or canoeing), survival (which involves building rafts, climbing or canoeing), abseiling (descending a rock face while secured to ropes), zip-lining (whizzing down a cable), canyoning (starting at the top of a river and then climbing, swimming, diving down the bed) or caving (scrambling, wriggling and crawling through caves and crevices)?
    • Maybe you feel more comfortable on a bodyboard (on a half-wave surfboard, you surf the high waves lying down-with flippers), on a hang glider or while paragliding (with a parachute you float down a mountain or dune), hydrospeeding (on a bodyboard with flippers and a wetsuit on you go down a wild river via rapids) or Tiefschneeskiing (racing down through powder snow)?
