De anchoring bias, ook wel bekend als het anker-effect of referentie-effect, is een cognitieve bias die ons denken beïnvloedt. We hebben de neiging om teveel waarde te hechten aan het eerste stukje informatie dat we over iets ontvangen. Dit eerste ankerpunt beïnvloedt vervolgens onze oordelen en beslissingen, zelfs wanneer er relevante aanvullende informatie beschikbaar is.
Wat zijn de belangrijke kenmerken van anchoring bias?
- Automatisch proces: De anchoring bias is een onbewust proces waar we ons niet altijd bewust van zijn.
- Verscheidenheid aan ankers: Het eerste ankerpunt kan op verschillende manieren worden gevormd, zoals door prijzen, getallen, schattingen of zelfs toevallige gebeurtenissen.
- Aanpassingsbias: We passen onze inschattingen onvoldoende aan, zelfs wanneer er duidelijk bewijs is dat het ankerpunt onjuist is.

Wat is een toepassing van anchoring bias in de praktijk?
- Marketing: Bedrijven gebruiken anchoring bias-technieken om producten aantrekkelijker te maken, bijvoorbeeld door een hoge referentieprijs te tonen en vervolgens een lagere verkoopprijs te presenteren.
- Rechtssysteem: Rechters en juryleden kunnen onbewust beïnvloed worden door ankerpunten, zoals het bedrag dat in een aanklacht wordt geëist.
- Wetenschappelijk onderzoek: Onderzoekers dienen zich bewust te zijn van de anchoring bias en maatregelen te nemen om te voorkomen dat deze hun resultaten beïnvloedt.
Praktijkvoorbeeld
Stel dat je een nieuwe televisie wilt kopen. Je ziet een model in de winkel met een prijskaartje van €1.000. Later die dag zie je hetzelfde model bij een andere winkel voor €800. De kans is groot dat je geneigd bent om de tweede winkel te kiezen, omdat de prijs van €800 een stuk aantrekkelijker lijkt ten opzichte van het ankerpunt van €1.000, zelfs als de televisie bij beide winkels evenveel waard is.
Kritische kanttekeningen
- Individuele verschillen: De mate waarin mensen beïnvloed worden door de anchoring bias kan per persoon verschillen.
- Bewustzijn: Door je bewust te zijn van de anchoring bias, kun je de invloed ervan op je denken en beslissingen verkleinen.
- Alternatieve strategieën: Er bestaan verschillende strategieën om de anchoring bias te omzeilen, zoals het vergelijken van meerdere opties en het kritisch evalueren van het eerste ankerpunt.
