Het leniency effect, ook wel bekend als leniency bias of milde beoordelingsbias, is een cognitieve bias die leidt tot de neiging om mensen die we vergelijkbaar met onszelf vinden milder te beoordelen, ongeacht hun prestaties of gedrag.
Deze bias kan zich manifesteren in verschillende contexten, van prestaties op de werkvloer tot persoonlijke relaties.
Wat zijn de belangrijkste kenmerken van het leniency effect?
- Subjectieve vergelijking: We beoordelen anderen vaak in relatie tot onszelf of een subjectieve norm, wat kan leiden tot onrechtvaardige vergelijkingen.
- Gedeelde kenmerken: De bias is sterker wanneer we meer gelijkenissen delen met de ander, zoals interesses, waarden of achtergrond.

Wat is een toepassing van het leniency effect in de praktijk?
- Sollicitaties: Sollicitanten die meer gelijkenissen vertonen met de recruiter, zoals qua opleiding of achtergrond, kunnen een voordeel hebben tijdens het sollicitatieproces.
- Vriendschappen: We zijn vaak geneigd om onze vrienden milder te beoordelen dan kennissen of vreemden, zelfs als hun gedrag vergelijkbaar is.
- Strafrecht: Rechters kunnen onbewust beïnvloed worden door het leniency effect bij het bepalen van straffen, waardoor gelijkaardige misdaden met verschillende straffen worden bestraft.
Praktijkvoorbeeld
Stel je voor dat je een leraar bent en twee leerlingen eenzelfde opdracht indienen. De ene leerling, Joris, is een harde werker die altijd zijn best doet, maar de opdracht is niet perfect. De andere leerling, Emma, is een leerling met leerproblemen die veel moeite heeft met dit soort opdrachten. De kans is groot dat je Joris' opdracht strenger beoordeelt, terwijl je meer begrip toont voor Emma's prestatie en haar een mildere beoordeling geeft, ondanks dat Joris' opdracht objectief gezien beter is.
Kritische kanttekeningen
- Ondermijning van objectiviteit: Het leniency effect kan leiden tot het verlies van objectiviteit en het nemen van slechte beslissingen.
