Intro

Backpacking or travelling in Serbia?

  • Not many people go on holiday to Serbia anymore - undeservedly so because it is a beautiful country and because it is quite small you can experience a lot in a short trip. Discover Belgrade and the Danube villages around it, but also make sure you have time for the incredibly beautiful nature. And you can easily connect it with other countries on a Balkan tour, such as Croatia and Bosnia.
  • Activities spotting: discover the city centre and the Kalemegdan fortress of Belgrade; enjoy art and culture in Novi Sad; taste wines in Sremski Karlovci; take your picture at the Drina River House; walk along the “Iron Gate” in Djerdap National Park; dance at Exit Festival - Europe's largest music festival; visit the Studenica Monastery; ski in Kapaonik; taste local wines on the Vrsac wine route; walk through Tara National Park.
  • Animal spotting: Balkan lyx, Serbian hummingbird, wolf, bear, red deer, otters, wild boar.
  • Food spotting: cevapi, ajvar, pljeskavica, gibanica, karadjordjeva schnitzel, sarma, prebranac, slatko, rakija, krofne.

Study in Serbia?

  • There is a wide range of (fairly affordable) studies in Serbia, for example in the fields of management, finance, economics, political science, art, agriculture, IT and more.
  • Study cities: Belgrade, Novi Sad, Nis.
  • Language: Serbian, with the occasional possibility in English.

Internships in Serbia?

  • Internships are available at international companies in IT, tourism and engineering, among others. It is a good opportunity to gain experience in a less explored market and to distinguish yourself.
  • Competencies: Serbian language skills, intercultural communication, project management, adaptability.

Volunteering in Serbia?

  • You can work in nature conservation projects, hostels, campsites, farms and social projects.

Working in Serbia?

  • Serbia has employment opportunities for expats, especially in IT and tourism. There are also opportunities for seasonal work in the mountains or along the Danube in the winter and summer months.

Working as a digital nomad in Serbia?

  • Belgrade and Novi Sad are increasingly popular with digital nomads, thanks to reasonable housing costs, fast internet and a vibrant city life.
  • Favorite locations: Belgrade, Novi Sad, Kopaonik.

Living in Serbia?

  • Affordable living, lots of culture, a vibrant community and beautiful nature - it's not bad to live in Serbia. And because of its strategic location for trade in Europe, the country also has very good highways.
  • Education: Public education is free, but there are also international schools that children can attend.
  • Expat community: Small and growing, especially in Belgrade and Novi Sad. Most expats work in diplomacy or for international organizations and NGOs.
  • Safety: Generally safe, but it may be wise to be vigilant at night in larger cities.
  • Culture: Serbian culture is welcoming and sociable. Serbians enjoy festivals, music, dance and good conversation. Coffee culture is big, and you will find that many social moments take place around a cup of coffee.
  • Beware: Bureaucracy can be slow and confusing and learning Serbian will definitely help.
  • Health insurance: Healthcare in Serbia is affordable and good, although facilities in larger cities are often better equipped than those in smaller villages. There are also private clinics with good facilities, but make sure you have your own comprehensive health insurance.

Travel in Serbia?

  • As a traveler, you can easily travel around this relatively young and affordable country, with beautiful nature and the Danube that flows through a large part of Serbia. Also have a drink in the cozy Belgrade!
  • In Djerdap National Park you will find the Djerdap gorge, which actually consists of four gorges with a river flowing through it. The other national parks such as Fruska Gora are also worth a visit.
  • In the monastery of Zica, the kings of Serbia used to be crowned, the monastery near Kraljevo has been renovated.
  • Visit Belgrade, it is a worthy capital of Serbia with its fortress, Kalemegdan park, the 19th century district Skadarlija, the Danube and good museums.
  • In Nis you will still find traces of the Ottoman Empire, such as a Turkish fortress. The Romans also left their mark in the area with the city of Mediana. Nivi Sad is sometimes called the Serbian Athens, the city may have a little less history than Athens, but it is the cultural heart of Serbia.
  • Serbian can be written in either Latin or Cyrillic script. This can be a challenge and can lead to confusing situations.

Every year the Exit Festival takes place in Serbia. I've never been but I've heard it's a great festival. This year it will take place from the 12-15th of July. It's a proper Dance music festival so make sure you're into that! A festival ticket is 120 euros, which is quite alright I think. If you al...

From language courses to gap year abroad, from work experience to volunteering abroad, from paid work to internship abroad, from mountaineering to diving and from backpacking to travel around the world

What social activities can you do abroad?

    • Opportunities are found in the areas of helping, learning or studying. You can get involved to volunteer in a social project at a school in Africa, Asia or Latin America. You can get involved in nature, in a project with animals or cleaning the sea or beaches. Those who want to learn more can choose for example a language course in Latin America, Spain or South Africa.

What work related activities can you do abroad?

    • If you want to gain work experience, and/or also earn money, go and work abroad. You can combine backpacking in Australia with temporary work. You can work on campsites in Europe or bush camps in Africa. You can pretty much go all over the world to work in the hospitality industry, hotels and hostels, in the healthcare sector or for example at a diving school.

What sports activities to do abroad?

    • Have you ever thought of mountain biking, rafting (going down a wild river on a raft or rubber dinghy, climbing or canoeing), survival (which involves building rafts, climbing or canoeing), abseiling (descending a rock face while secured to ropes), zip-lining (whizzing down a cable), canyoning (starting at the top of a river and then climbing, swimming, diving down the bed) or caving (scrambling, wriggling and crawling through caves and crevices)?
    • Maybe you feel more comfortable on a bodyboard (on a half-wave surfboard, you surf the high waves lying down-with flippers), on a hang glider or while paragliding (with a parachute you float down a mountain or dune), hydrospeeding (on a bodyboard with flippers and a wetsuit on you go down a wild river via rapids) or Tiefschneeskiing (racing down through powder snow)?
