More about Kuti Wildlife Reserve in past and present

World Supporter CV

  • Kuti Wildlife Reserve is run by a non-profit trust "with the key objective of protecting wildlife and conserving the environment in Malawi by working together with the local communities."
  • They aim to benefit both the people and the environment by developing responsible tourism within the reserve, offering environmental education, restoring habitats, reducing environmental degradation and providing communities with alternatives to destructive practices.

Products & Services CV

Kuti is a wildlife reserve in Malawi, just 1.5 hours from Lilongwe and around 30 mins from Malawi's famous Lake of Stars. This reserve is home to big mammals like giraffe, zebra, sable and impala, and you can find many birdspecies.

Activities

  • As a visitor of Kuti you can go wildlife spotting and birding in your own vehicle, walking trails and cycling. It is also possible to visit the education center where you can learn more about the animals and their habitats, and try out a range of educational games.

Accommodation

  • Stay at Kuti in one of their eco-friendly accommodation possibilities and experience the African bush! You can choose between a bush villa, the Seymour cottage, an A-frame lodge or go camping with your own equipment.
  • "As an eco-lodge we run solely on solar power and promote alternative fuels such as briquettes for cooking. We also pump water from our own private boreholes within the park using solar energy, which means it can be drunk from the taps throughout the reserve. Hot water boilers are lit when you need them and our staff will endeavour to take as much or as little care of you as you wish!"

Work & Internship CV

Jobs

  • According to JoHo's information, there are no paid job opportunities (yet) at Kuti, but there are opportunities in exchange for room and board.

Internships

  • It is possible for students to do an internship at Kuti, but note that availability is limited. Contact Kuti to ask about current possibilities.

Volunteering

  • It is possible to join Kuti's volunteer programme and get involved in the many projects at the reserve.
  • The areas of those projects are conservation and ecology; wildlife release programmes; community outreach, habitat and wildlife protection; environmental education; marketing and events.
  • Duration 2-12 weeks. For many projects it is possible to stay less than 4 weeks, but some projects are for long-term volunteers.
  • The cost for the placement includes a donation to the project, your accommodation, food, airport transfers, work-related transport, training, and full support and assistance from the Kuti management throughout your stay (not for a low-budget volunteer).
  • Occassionally, Kuti Wildlife looks for tourism or volunteer coordinators (see the vacancies on the right side of this page).

For working at Kuti Wildlife reserve, you have to be able to handle living in the 'bush' in the midst of zebras, impalas and other wildlife. You have to be able to live without electricity (there is limited power via solar panels) and must be able to withstand the heat and rather primitive living standards.
