De mens geeft regelmatig antwoord op vragen over de cognitieve processen die ten grondslag liggen aan keuzes, evaluaties, gedrag en uitspraken. Veel sociaal psychologen hebben experimenten gedaan met proefpersonen en hen gevraagd waarom ze zich gedragen, kiezen en evalueren zoals ze doen. Andere sociaal psychologen zijn van mening dat aan proefpersonen moet worden gevraagd hoe hun cognitieve processen mogelijk zouden werken als ze met een bepaalde stimulus worden geconfronteerd. Recentelijk hebben wetenschappers voorgesteld dat we mogelijk geen toegang hebben tot de hogere mentale processen (zoals probleem oplossen). Waarschijnlijk komen alleen de producten van de mentale activiteiten in het bewustzijn. Er zijn echter geen data die deze veronderstellingen ondersteunen. Daarnaast is er veel onderzoek gedaan naar meer basis processen, zoals perceptie en geheugen. Onderzoek heeft uitgewezen dat er geen bewust bewustzijn is van perceptie en geheugen. Zolang er nog geen bewijs is dat mensen niet correct kunnen vertellen over hun cognitieve processen, blijven wetenschappers proefpersonen vragen stellen over hun cognitieve processen. Daarnaast vraagt men zich af wat de afkomst is van de antwoorden van proefpersonen op zulke vragen als er geen introspectieve toegang is. Tenslotte bestaat er bij de anti-introspectieve kijk geen mogelijkheid dat de antwoorden van proefpersonen altijd goed kunnen zijn. Er volgt nu een overzicht van het bewijs over de accuraatheid van de subjectieve verslagen over hogere mentale processen.
De volgende drie conclusies zullen aan bod komen: (1) mensen kunnen vaak geen verslag doen van het bestaan van de reactie die werd geproduceerd door manipulaties, (2) mensen geven vaak niet aan dat er sprake was van een change process, oftewel dat de reactie onderhevig was aan veranderingen, en (3) mensen kunnen niet de stimuli identificeren die hun respons heeft uitgelokt.
Bewustwording van het bestaan van een respons
Mensen willen graag de oorzaken weten van hun attitudinale, emotionele en gedragsmatige responses. Dit is ook het centrale idee van de attributie theorie. De studie van Vallins en Ray (1967) is hierop gebaseerd. Mensen met een fobische angst voor slangen moesten naar plaatjes kijken met slangen terwijl ze af en toe een shock kregen toegediend. De participanten werden ook bedraad zodat het geloofwaardig was dat het ritmische patroon dat ze hoorden hun hartslag was. Na het plaatje met het woord 'shock' kregen de participanten een shock. Dit werd later ook vergezeld met een verhoogd hartritme. De plaatjes met de slangen waren nooit gecombineerd met een verhoogd hartritme. Vervolgens werd de participanten gevraagd of ze een boa constrictor wilden aanraken. Participanten die het verhoogde hartritme hoorden bij het plaatje van de 'shock' naderden de slang dichterbij dan de participanten die dachten dat de hartritme geluiden van 'buitenaf' waren. Participanten in de hartritme groep leerden dus dat hun hartslag omhoog ging door het krijgen van de shock en niet door het zien van een slang.
