Je gebruikt deze functie wanneer je cijfers in je databestand gebruikt die niet meteen de werkelijke betekenis aanduiden. Zo kun je bijvoorbeeld aan de numerieke codes 0 en 1 de waarde ‘man’ en ‘vrouw’ toekennen. Het kader 'define value labels' wordt opgeroepen door in desbetreffende cel te staan van de kolom 'values'. Op dat ogenblik staat er in die cel de waarde 'none'. Als je de cel aanklikt, verschijnt er een blauw blokje met puntjes. Bij het aanklikken van dit blokje verschijnt het kader waarin je kan aangeven welke betekenis bepaalde cijfers hebben.
