Intro

Backpacking or traveling in Dominica?

  • One of the best kept secrets of the region. Dominica is a beautiful island, full of green, mountains, volcanoes and waterfalls. No masses of beach tourists come here, but adventurers, nature lovers and those seeking peace and quiet.
  • Spotting activities: hike to Boiling Lake, a gigantic hot spring lake in the heart of the jungle; snorkel at Champagne Reef; walk through the Valley of the Geysers; admire the Emerald Pool in the middle of the jungle; cool off at Trafalgar Falls; combine history and nature at Fort Shirley in Cabrits National Park; learn about the original islanders in the Kalinago Territory; pamper yourself in the Hot Springs of Wotten Waven; look out over the Caribbean Sea and Atlantic Ocean at Scott's Head.
  • Spotting animals: Sisserou parrot, Jaco parrot, sperm whales, green sea turtles, Caribbean manatee, Caribbean lobsters, dolphins.
  • Food spotting: mountain chicken (it's not a chicken, but a giant frog, oddly enough), callaloo soup, Caribbean lobster, salted fish with green bananas, bouyon, agouti.

Studying in Dominica?

  • The possibilities are limited, but it is of course a great place to study. The island mainly attracts medical students and students in ecological fields.
  • Study city: Portsmouth.
  • Language: English.

Internships in Dominica?

  • Internships can mainly be found at universities, for example in the field of (marine) ecological research.

Volunteering in Dominica?

  • There are opportunities for volunteer work. For example, you can find opportunities in the field of ecological research, ecotourism, community support and education.

Working in Dominica?

  • It is not easy to find work in Dominica. The largest sectors are ecotourism and agriculture, so this is the best place to look.

Working as a digital nomad in Dominica?

  • Dominica is not a popular digital nomad destination, but that is precisely why it can be interesting. It is a paradise with reasonably stable internet in the cities (but also many places without internet) and some work places here and there.
  • Favorite locations: Roseau & Portsmouth.

Living in Dominica?

  • Living in Dominica is for those who like to live in nature and want to exchange the hustle and bustle of the city for peace and quiet. You live a paradise island life, it is only less developed (and therefore cheaper) than some other islands in the region. It is also easy that English is spoken.
  • Education: there are a few primary and secondary schools.
  • Expat community: you will meet many American, Canadian and British expats, but also expats from other countries.
  • Safety: quite safe!
  • Culture: the culture of Dominica is a mix of Caribbean traditions and indigenous Kalinago influences. Expect many colorful festivals, music and dance.
  • Note: life in Dominica can be basic, especially in terms of infrastructure. Don't expect metropolitan luxury, and be prepared for an island pace, where things can sometimes take a little longer. Health Insurance: Dominica has a number of hospitals and health centers, mainly in Roseau. For specialized care, it may be necessary to travel to another island. So make sure you have your own good health insurance.
