The goal is that the students really learn to look at their environment.
Photo walk
This assignment is for students who can go around their own town, village in small groups, so not for very young students.
You need:
20 printed pictures of details in their neighborhood (one set for each group)*
Paper
Pens
(a questionnaire, if you want)
(A digital camera/phone with camera for each group)
Divide the group in small groups(4 persons). Each group gets a paper, a pen and a set of 20 printed pictures (and a questionnaire). The assignment is to find the places where there pictures were taken, and to describe the place on the paper. If you like you can make a questionnaire about the places. So for example:
When you are at the side of picture 1, turn around and you will see a house, who lives in this house.
If you are not able to print the pictures but the students have smart phones you can also send them the digital photo’s. If each group has a camera or phone with camera you can ask them to make a picture of the place as soon as they arrive (instead of describing the place).
The group who finds all the places fist wins. The goal it that the students really learn to look. So make pictures of details. So for example a characteristic window of a house, a piece of art on a wall or a unusual tree.
A second assignment can be that groups first have to take 20 pictures and make questions with this, and then have to solve one of the ‘photo walks’ of another group.
Taking the pictures and making the questionnaire takes some time. But it’s nice to do because you also learn to look better yourself. You start paying attention to details.
