Intro

Backpacking or traveling in Slovenia?

  • Slovenia is one of the less discovered vacation destinations in between popular Austria, Croatia and Italy. So that also means it's still fairly cheap and less touristy than the surrounding countries. It is green, there is lots of delicious local food, the people are real outdoor enthusiasts and the capital Ljubljana has a fine student culture.
  • Activity spotting: hike through Triglav National park, visit the extraordinary Lake Bled, kayak on Lake Bohinj, feel like you're in a fairy tale at Predjama Castle, explore Ljubljana's Central Market, admire the architecture of Jože Plečnik, taste the world's oldest wine in Maribor, swim in the Adriatic Sea, and discover the Italian-powerful town of Piran.
  • Animal spotting: brown bear, wolf, red deer, lynx, chamois, great bustard, European ohoe, Slovenian salamander.

Studying in Slovenia?

  • Education in Slovenia is good, and the university in Ljubljana in particular attracts many international students. Facilities are modern, there is much international cooperation, and research programs are strong. Engineering, economics, environmental and natural sciences, arts and spiritual sciences are popular studies. For EU students, it's also free.
  • Study cities: Ljubljana, Maribor, Bled, Koper, Nova Gorica.
  • Language: Slovenian, but also many studies in English.

Internship in Slovenia?

  • There is a wide range of internship opportunities. Consider internships at a university or research institute, in tourism and hospitality, arts and culture, business administration, finance, digital marketing. There is a strong focus on innovation, sustainability and international business, allowing you to gain valuable experience as an intern.
  • Competencies: international cooperation and networking, language skills in multiple languages, multicultural skills, knowledge of sustainability and environmental management, ecotourism.

Doing volunteer work in Slovenia?

  • There are not many volunteer organizations for foreigners. However, you can find many opportunities to volunteer for board and lodging with private individuals. Think for example about sustainable farming, helping around the house or working in a hostel.

Working in Slovenia?

  • In Slovenia they are looking hard for foreign workers. There is a huge shortage in many sectors. To find a job you have a chance in the hospitality (for example as a cook or kitchen help), production (machine operators), construction (building), health care, forest management and education sectors.
  • Work culture: Slovenians have a strong work ethic and are professional workers. Most companies follow a hierarchical structure, but teamwork is also very important. A good work-life balance is important and taking vacation days is encouraged.

Working as a digital nomad in Slovenia?

  • Slovenia is a relatively undiscovered digital nomad haven. It is perfect for the adventurer who wants to get to know the east and west of Europe and not spend too much. The country's entrepreneurial spirit and embrace of working remotely have led to a diverse range of coworking spaces, cafes and libraries set up specifically to meet the needs of digital nomads.
  • The country is also easy to travel to and on your days off you can easily choose to go to the beach, trek into the high mountains, or read a book on a beautiful terrace in one of the towns.
  • Favorite locations: Ljublana, Maribor, Koper, Bled.

Living in Slovenia?

  • Slovenia is one of the top countries on the emigration destination ladder ... and for good reason. The country is not very touristy yet, but it has all the amenities. It is more affordable than surrounding countries and at the same time, you can also enjoy beautiful nature and wonderful beaches here. The people are friendly and the country is very safe.
  • So the quality of life is good! Especially for adventure lovers. Also, the food is delicious and the country is clean. And there are plenty of good educational institutions for families with children.
  • But... the salary is not very high, if you come from the West, it is useful to speak a few words Slovenian if you want to integrate into society, the people are quite closed in the beginning and you pay a lot of taxes.
  • Health insurance: health care is of high quality with modern and clean facilities, but make sure you have your own well-covered health insurance to cover the costs.

Travel in Slovenia

  • Slovenia is not (yet) a very popular holiday destination, and it is one of the greenest countries in Europe. It has the characteristic capital Ljubljana. Furthermore, it is still reasonably cheap and a sunny summer destination.
  • Under the high peaks of Mount Triglav lies the glacier lake Lake Bohinj. Here you can go kayaking or mountain climbing in the area.
  • The Logarska Dolina National Park is worth a walk with a glacier valley, grassland and mountain peaks.
  • Discover Slovenia's underground world heritage during a guided tour: the Škocjan Caves. The Reka River plunges through these caves for 34 kilometres and at one point you can cross this river via the famous Cerkvenik Bridge.
  • Slovenia is well on its way to becoming the European paradise for extreme sports. In the Sǒca Valley, for example, you can go canyoning down waterfalls, rafting on the river or paragliding above the beautiful landscape. JoHotspots in Slovenia
  • Piran is a charming coastal town on the Istrian peninsula with beautiful Venetian architecture.
  • Predjama Castle, built halfway up a cliff face in the entrance to a cave, is one of the most uniquely situated castles in the world. This four-storey fortress is definitely worth a visit and the drawbridge over the fast-flowing river is not to be missed.
  • If you are looking for a colourful and lively nightlife, go to the capital: Ljubljana. In the summer months, the old city centre really comes to life. Everywhere on the streets you will see friendly people coming out of the pubs and cafes. Metelkova, a former army barracks in Ljubljana, which used to house squatters, now serves as an alternative mix of pubs, art studios, and clubs where all kinds of music genres are played. During the day, you can take the funicular up to the castle to enjoy the view or admire the frescoes of St. Nicholas Cathedral. JoHorribles in Slovenia
  • Bicycles can be rented in various tourist places. Be careful when you go cycling, Slovenians are not used to cyclists in traffic.

From language courses to gap year abroad, from work experience to volunteering abroad, from paid work to internship abroad, from mountaineering to diving and from backpacking to travel around the world

What social activities can you do abroad?

    • Opportunities are found in the areas of helping, learning or studying. You can get involved to volunteer in a social project at a school in Africa, Asia or Latin America. You can get involved in nature, in a project with animals or cleaning the sea or beaches. Those who want to learn more can choose for example a language course in Latin America, Spain or South Africa.

What work related activities can you do abroad?

    • If you want to gain work experience, and/or also earn money, go and work abroad. You can combine backpacking in Australia with temporary work. You can work on campsites in Europe or bush camps in Africa. You can pretty much go all over the world to work in the hospitality industry, hotels and hostels, in the healthcare sector or for example at a diving school.

What sports activities to do abroad?

    • Have you ever thought of mountain biking, rafting (going down a wild river on a raft or rubber dinghy, climbing or canoeing), survival (which involves building rafts, climbing or canoeing), abseiling (descending a rock face while secured to ropes), zip-lining (whizzing down a cable), canyoning (starting at the top of a river and then climbing, swimming, diving down the bed) or caving (scrambling, wriggling and crawling through caves and crevices)?
    • Maybe you feel more comfortable on a bodyboard (on a half-wave surfboard, you surf the high waves lying down-with flippers), on a hang glider or while paragliding (with a parachute you float down a mountain or dune), hydrospeeding (on a bodyboard with flippers and a wetsuit on you go down a wild river via rapids) or Tiefschneeskiing (racing down through powder snow)?
