Mensen met intellectuele beperkingen (ID: Intellectual Disabilities) hebben een grotere kans om probleemgedrag te vertonen. Twee factoren die van invloed zijn op het ontwikkelen of in stand houden van probleemgedrag bij mensen met ID zijn persoonsgebonden kenmerken (zoals geslacht en leeftijd) en de psychosociale omgeving, zoals stressvolle gebeurtenissen en de houding van hulpverleners. Vaak worden interventies uitgevoerd die op de korte termijn effectief zijn, maar die op de lange termijn het probleemgedrag in stand houden.
Hulpverleners hebben veel te maken met het probleemgedrag van cliënten, en de manier waarop zij met dit gedrag omgaan heeft invloed op het effect van hulpverlening of zorg voor mensen met ID. De blijvende aard van probleemgedrag van mensen met ID in combinatie met een gebrek aan kennis over de manier waarop met dit gedrag moet worden omgegaan zorgen voor stress bij zowel cliënt als hulpverlener. Uit onderzoek is gebleken dat goede training en assistentie voor en tijdens de hulpverlening effectief is. Feedback is hierbij een goede strategie, deze feedback kan verbaal gegeven worden, of bijvoorbeeld geschreven of via videobeelden. Een belangrijke factor in responsief gedrag van hulpverleners, waar in onderzoek weinig aandacht aan besteed wordt, is de emotionele intelligentie van hulpverleners. Dit zijn de emotionele en sociale vaardigheden van een persoon om adequaat om te gaan met hun omgeving. Voorbeelden hiervan zijn het herkennen van emoties bij andere mensen, en de strategieën die gebruikt worden om om te gaan met stress of problemen. De emotionele intelligentie voorspelt het algemeen functioneren en welzijn, kan veranderen over tijd, en kan worden getraind. Bij de omgang met probleemgedrag beïnvloedt de emotionele intelligentie de selectie van coping-strategieën. Uit onderzoek blijkt dat hulpverleners met een hoge emotionele intelligentie beter met probleemgedrag van cliënten om kunnen gaan.
Een instrument dat vaak gebruikt wordt om de emotionele intelligentie te meten is de Bar-On EQ-i. Dit is een vragenlijst met 5 domeinen: intrapersoonlijke vaardigheden, interpersoonlijke vaardigheden, aanpassingsvermogen, stress management, en algemene stemming. In dit onderzoek wordt gekeken of trainingsprogramma’s voor hulpverleners die gericht zijn op het verbeteren van de emotionele intelligentie effectief zijn. Hierbij wordt training gegeven aan de hand van (video-) feedback, en de emotionele intelligentie wordt gemeten met de EQ-i. Uit het onderzoek blijkt dat het geven van training voor het verbeteren van emotionele intelligentie effectief is. De betrokken hulpverleners kregen door de training een verbeterde emotionele intelligentie. Het werkende element hierbij is bewustzijn (awareness), de hulpverleners werden bewuster van hun eigen emotionele intelligentie en hoe dit hun gedrag beïnvloedt. Andere studies hebben al het begrip mindfulness onderzocht, dit lijkt op bewustzijn. Dit is het bewust zijn van jezelf en een situatie, zonder deze te beoordelen. Uit onderzoek is gebleken dat training in mindfulness de interactie tussen hulpverlener en cliënt bevordert, en verwacht wordt dat trainingen in emotionele intelligentie dit ook doen. Hierover dient meer onderzoek gedaan te worden.
