Wie was Slimme Hans en wat leert zijn verhaal ons?

Binnen de psychologie is het vaak moeilijk te beslissen welke data je moet verzamelen, hoe je de data moet verzamelen en welke conclusies je uit de data kunt trekken. Het verhaal van het paard slimme Hans (Kluger Hans) bewijst hoe makkelijk het is om hierin fouten te maken.

Wilhelm von Osten wilde bewijzen dat dieren intelligent zijn en probeerde daarom zijn hengst Hans wiskunde bij te brengen met een verbluffend resultaat. Het paard kon rekensommen beantwoorden (door met zijn voet te stampen) en ja/nee vragen beantwoorden (door knikken en schudden).
