Het bestuderen van Internationale Economische Betrekkingen wordt steeds belangrijker. Nu, aan het begin van de 21ste eeuw, hebben landen nauwere betrekkingen middels handel in goederen en services, geldstromen en investeringen in elkaars economieën dan ooit tevoren.
De VS is door zijn omvang en diversiteit minder afhankelijk van internationale handelsbetrekkingen dan de rest van de wereld.
Bij Internationale Economische Betrekkingen wordt gebruik gemaakt van dezelfde onderzoeksmethoden als bij andere onderdelen van de economie, omdat het gedrag en de beweegredenen van individuen hetzelfde zijn bij internationale betrekkingen als bij binnenlandse transacties.
De hoofdzaak van Internationale Economische Betrekkingen is gebaseerd op problemen die ontstaan door de economische interactie tussen soevereine staten. Dit belangrijke onderwerp is onder te verdelen in zeven thema’s gedurende de studie van Internationale Economische Betrekkingen: de voordelen van handel, handelspatronen, protectionisme, de betalingsbalans, het vaststellen van de wisselkoers, het coördineren van het internationale beleid en de internationale kapitaalmarkt.
Wel of geen handel?
Het is duidelijk dat een zekere mate van handel voordelig is. Niemand zal immers denken dat Noorwegen haar eigen sinaasappels verbouwt. Velen zijn echter sceptisch over de voordelen van handel in goederen die een land zelf ook kan produceren. Het belangrijkste inzicht in de internationale economie is dan ook dat er “gains from trade” plaatsvinden. Dat wil zeggen dat wanneer landen goederen en diensten aan elkaar verkopen, deze handel vrijwel altijd voor beide landen voordelig is. Dit is dan ook veel vaker het geval dan wel gedacht wordt. Het is een veel voorkomende misvatting dat handel schadelijk is wanneer er grote ongelijkheden in productiviteit of loonpeil bestaan tussen de verschillende landen.
Alhoewel landen over het algemeen voordeel ondervinden van handel, is het wel goed mogelijk dat internationale handel bepaalde groepen binnen een land schaadt. Internationale handel zou dan een sterk effect hebben op de verdeling van inkomen.
Waarom handel?
Internationale economen houden zich in grote mate bezig met onderzoek om patronen van internationale handel te kunnen verklaren. Hoewel sommige patronen simpel te verklaren zijn (kennis over klimaat en grondstoffen verklaart bijvoorbeeld waarom Brazilië koffie exporteert en Saudi-Arabië olie), zijn vele patronen moeilijker te verklaren. Waarom bijvoorbeeld exporteert Japan auto’s, terwijl de Verenigde Staten vliegtuigen exporteren? Verschillende theorieën met betrekking tot deze patronen komen later in de stof aan de orde.
