Diagnostische vragen
Wie vertrouw je? wie mag hier wonen? wie wordt een goede psycholoog? wie krijgt die baan? wie is een terrorist? wie wordt ziek? wie kan mij helpen? Het gevoel voor diagnostiek is overgevoelig voor gevaar (ernstigere misdaad, eerder schuldig?) en kansen (1 op een miljoen v.s. 1 op een miljard?) en gaat uit van een ‘better safe than sorry’ principe.
Mensen zijn amateur diagnostici: snelle, automatische associaties ; nauwelijks onder eigen controle; weinig logisch of consequent
Hoe kunnen we onze feilbare inschattingen verbeteren?
- Preciezer vragen: wat wil je weten?
- Beter waarnemen: betrouwbare en valide instrumenten
- Beter beslissen: logische beslisregels
- Fouten vermijden door ze te kennen
- Beslissingen evalueren
- Transparantie: repliceerbaar beslissen
Eenduidige vraag: grond beslissing impliciet
(psychological) assessment = (psycho)diagnostiek
Test: procedure in which a sample of an individual’s behavior is obtained, evaluated and scored using standardized procedures = instrument = gestandaardiseerd
Instrument: baseren op een theorie, meet wat jij wilt meten (meetpretentie), meten wat hij zegt te meten (validiteit), betrouwbaar zijn, niet afhankelijk van toeval.

- Beschrijven (concreet of objectief)
- Classificeren (categoriseren)
- Voorspellen
- Verklaren
- Indiceren (aanpak)
- Evalueren
Bij classificeren is het heel belangrijk dat de grenzen van een categorie heel duidelijk zijn en niet al te rekbaar zijn.
