Deze auteur heeft de volgende kritiek op de BET. Volgens de auteur is de BET vooral gebaseerd op gezond verstand en te gemakkelijke aannames over gezichtsuitdrukkingen. Er zijn binnen de theorie nog veel onopgeloste conceptuele problemen. Daarbij heeft nieuw onderzoek gewezen op allerlei feiten over gezichten en gezichtsuitdrukkingen, en de BET zou moeten worden herziend. Er zou ook moeten worden gekeken niet naar-emotionele aspecten van gezichtsuitdrukkingen. Tot slot zou er onderscheid moeten worden gemaakt tussen de gezichtsuitdrukking, en de interpretatie van die gezichtsuitdrukking.
De gezichtsuitdrukking
Er bestaan verschillende categorisaties van gezichtsuitdrukkingen. De meeste zijn echter gebaseerd op zeer overdreven gezichtsuitdrukkingen. Wanneer we kijken naar wat de gezichtsuitdrukking veroorzaakt, gaat de BET simpelweg uit van een causaal verband tussen emotie en gezichtsuitdrukking. Het is zo simpel als “geluk doet je lachen” en “pijn doet je huilen”. Er is echter maar weinig bewijs voor dit causale verband. Er zijn heel veel oorzaken die het gezicht doen bewegen, zoals reflexen, zintuigen, en sociale interacties.
De interpretatie van de gezichtsuitdrukking
De BET neemt aan dat mensen emoties bij anderen herkennen. Dit wordt door hen ook wel emotion recognition genoemd. Deze aanname is gebaseerd op studies waarmee personen een bepaalde emotie moeten koppelen aan een bepaalde gezichtsuitdrukking op een foto. Er zijn echter grote methodologische problemen met deze onderzoeken. Ten eerste zouden de resultaten het gevolg kunnen zijn van slecht onderzoeksontwerp (e.g. overdreven gezichtsuitdrukkingen). Ten tweede wordt de gezichtsuitdrukking uit de context gehaald, terwijl men normaal gesproken ook de context gebruikt om de gezichtsuitdrukking te interpreteren. Wat de BET herkenning noemt, kan beter interpretatie worden genoemd. Deze interpretatie wordt beïnvloedt door allerlei factoren, zoals de interesses en motieven en emotionele staat van degene die de gezichtsuitdrukking interpreteert.
Universaliteit
De BET gaat uit van universaliteit van herkenning. Dit betekent dat de basis emoties door iedereen gemakkelijk kunnen worden herkend, ongeacht de cultuur, taal, of opleiding van degene die de gezichtsuitdrukking interpreteert. Er zijn echter wel culturele verschillen gevonden.
Minimale universaliteit
De auteur stelt minimale universaliteit voor. Mensen maken simpele interpretaties van anderen (e.g. is die ander boos of blij?). Vooral als kinderen maken mensen eerst zeer gemakkelijke indelingen van emoties. Maar naarmate kinderen ouder worden, wordt er ook meer gecategoriseerd. Het is dan niet boos versus blij, maar boos omdat ze geen snoepje krijgen versus boos omdat mama niet luistert. Uiteindelijk ontstaan er heel veel verschillende emotionele concepten, die zeker niet gelijk zijn voor alle individuen, talen, en culturen.
Alternatieven
Twee voorbeelden van alternatieven zijn de behavioral ecology view van Fridlund en de appraisal theories van Ortony en Turner. De auteur stelt zelf een alternatief voor. Emotie zou niet moeten worden gezien als een wetenschappelijke term. Het is beter om een bepaald moment of periode als emotioneel te benoemen. Deze periodes bestaan uit veranderingen in bepaalde component processen, zoals periferische fysiologische veranderingen en subjectieve ervaringen. Geen van deze is op zichzelf een emotie. Ook zijn de op zichzelf niet vereist of voldoende om een emotionele periode tot stand te brengen. Elk component heeft zijn eigen semi-onafhankelijke causale proces.
