Artikel Hondius; Finding common ground in education about the Holocaust and slavery
Holocaust en slavernij roepen nog veel emoties en gevoelens op bij zowel slachtoffers als bij niet-slachtoffers.
-> dit maakt het moeilijk om er onderwijs over te geven.
EU: veel over holocaust lesgegeven, weinig tot niet over de slavernij
VS: veel over slavernij lesgegeven, weinig tot niet over de holocaust
Om zoveel mogelijk conflict etc. te vermijden:
-> conceptual history: slechts dingen die hebben plaatsgevonden in de geschiedenis worden genoemd, zonder implicaties. Deze concepten moeten de samenleving hebben beïnvloed en gevormd. Startpunten voor discussies, kunnen verschillend geïnterpreteerd worden.
-> leerlingen mogen eigen bijdrage leveren, waarvan zij vinden dat belangrijk is geweest voor de samenleving.
Virtue education kan zorgen voor persoonlijke reflectie en confrontatie met eigen acties. Empathie voor slachtoffers kan studenten leren hoe zij, als burger, een bijdrage kunnen leveren aan de samenleving van nu.
Hilberg: er zijn slachtoffer, bijstanders en daders
-> later toegevoegd: verzetsstrijders en ‘helpers’
Voor leerlingen wordt het begrijpelijker wanneer zij de gebeurtenissen in een directe context kunnen plaatsen. Vb. door foto’s etc.
-> ook ‘onderzoekend’ leren, zelf ontdekken
-> vereist andere vaardigheden van docenten dan 30 jaar geleden
-> er worden hiervoor vaak verhalen gebruikt van kinderen die slachtoffer zijn geworden
‘Ras’ kan gebruikt worden als een soort geloof in ras, zo kan het ongelijke behandelingen rechtvaardigen.
Nog steeds een gevoel van onbehaaglijkheid ten opzichte van ras en racisme
-> wel verschillende menselijke rassen, maar het ras op zich werd niet besproken -> taboe
Er moeten verschillende bronnen e.d. gebruikt worden bij het ‘ontdekken’ en vertellen van de geschiedenis.
-> dit moet gedaan worden om een zo compleet mogelijk beeld te geven van wat er allemaal gebeurd is.
