Intro

What is a sand fly?

  • Sand flies are tiny blood-eating stinging flies. The sand fly has a light brown yellowish color and transparent wings.
  • Sand fly females live on blood and their stings can cause a lot of itching.
  • Sand flies are somewhat the hooligans among sting flies, they are articularly active in the evening and at night, preferring to sting your face and attack in groups
  • However, the word sandfly in different countries refers to different insects, all of which sting but do not necessarily transmit diseases

What is the difference between a sand fly, stinging fly and a sand flea?

  •  Sand flies are tiny stinging flies that sting and sand fleas are tiny parasites that bite

Where are sand flies found?

  • Sand flies live all over the world in sandy areas such as beaches and deserts
  • Sand flies can be found in Europe, especially during the summer along the Mediterranean coast, but also in countries bordering the North Sea such as Belgium.
  • In New Zealand, the “sand fly” is dark in color and more difficult to recognize as a sand fly (because it is not a sand fly, but an itch mosquito)

Are sand flies and sting flies dangerous?

  • Sand flies can transmit several diseases, including the dangerous sand fly disease leishmaniasis.
  •  A small fraction of the more than 1,000 species of sand flies can transmit the disease leishmaniasis. Leishmaniasis normally causes mild symptoms but can also be fatal
  •  In some areas, sand flies spread diseases such as bluetongue, malaria and western Nile disease
  • So be well informed at your destination

What can you do against sand flies and stinging flies?

  • Use DEET, covering clothes and a mosquito net to keep sand flies at bay.

What can you do if you have been stung by sand flies?

  • After being stung by sand flies you get bumps similar to mosquito bites, since they attack you in groups you often have a lot of them right away.
  • The bumps cause a very irritating itching and tickling, which also increases in the days before they disappear (5 to 7 days)
  • Scratch them carefully because if you scratch them open you get infections again
  • The itching and rash are usually only controllable with anti-itch medication (Afterbite, click away etc.) or soothing zinc ointment
