Herkenning van de outgroup verhaal kwam op onder Joodse-Israëlische participanten binnen de co-existentie positie wanneer het onderwerp van een bedachte toekomst opkwam.
Palestijnen en Israëliërs verschillen in het beeld van hun geschiedenis. Dit zorgt ervoor dat pogingen om vrede te creëren worden tegengehouden.
Contact-hypothese en Common Ingroup Identity Model
-> wanneer leden van verschillende groepen elkaar ontmoeten onder de beste omstandigheden zal dit leiden tot stereotype ondermijnende informatie
-> in de praktijk wordt dit de coexistence approach genoemd.
-> werkt niet altijd
In plaats daarvan:
Confrontational approach: ontmoeting moet niet plaatsvinden tussen individuen maar tussen groepen
-> gemeenschappelijke verschillen van sociale identiteiten
Historische verhalen zijn representaties van geschiedenis die een groepsgevoel van wat is en moet zijn includeert. Dit is dus de basis van groepsidentiteit, normen en waarden.
Discussies over geschiedenis kan mensen binden aan hun nationale identiteit en gezamenlijke processen uitlokken gekarakteriseerd door gezamenlijk oneens zijn.
Resultaten
- er is een gemeenschappelijk patroon van vertelsel polarisaties tussen Joods-Israëlische en Palestijnse participanten.
- verschillende verhalen bij de verschillende participanten wanneer de toekomst wordt besproken.
Discussie
- experimenteel proces van intergroup contact is voor een groot deel gevormd door uiteenlopende, wederzijds exclusieve verhalen die de ontoegevendheid in het Israël-Palestijn conflict bepalen.
- een hypothetische, na-conflict toekomst bespreken kan groepen bij elkaar brengen, maar wel in beperkte mate.
Conclusie
Onderzoeksvraag: Geschiedenis is gecodificeerd door de constructie en de ontwikkeling van verhalen.
-> intergroup dialoog kan een reproductieve rol hebben in een omgeving van ontoegevendheid, los gezien van het type dialoog.
Tekortkomingen
- niet generaliseerbaar, doordat het maar gefocust is op één programma
- er is maar één taal gebruikt in het voeren van de discussies, dit kan een achterstand geven aan kinderen die niet zo vloeiend zijn in deze taal.
