Aanwijzingen voor onbewuste stress
De effecten van stress op slaap wijzen op onbewuste stress. Stressoren, zorgen maken en aan stress gerelateerde persoonlijkheden leiden ertoe dat de cardiologische activiteit tijdens de slaap niet afneemt. Veel van de informatie die door de dag heen geleerd is wordt tijdens de slaap herhaald. Deze cognitieve activiteit is onbewust.
Daarnaast wijst ook het effect van zorgen maken overdag op onbewuste stress. Nadat een periode van zorgen maken is afgelopen, blijft de hartslag nog tot twee uur erna verhoogd. Aangezien er tijdens de verlengde periode van cardiologische activiteit geen sprake was van cognitieve perseveratie moet de activiteit ergens anders door worden veroorzaakt. Ook na het einde van geprovoceerde woede bleven de effecten nog langer doorgaan. Deze effecten waren niet toe te schrijven aan gedachten over woede of negatief affect.
Subliminaal gepresenteerde negatief emotionele stimuli gaven ook effect op huidgeleiding en activiteit in de amygdala. Subliminale presentatie houdt in dat de presentatie zo kort was dat de stimuli niet bewust waar genomen konden worden. Ook is uit onderzoek gebleken dat subliminale negatief emotionele stimuli kunnen zorgen voor verhoogde bloeddruk.
De psychologie en onderbewustzijn
Mensen zijn zich van het grootste deel van hun cognitie niet bewust. Het grootste deel gaat automatisch. Als we alle informatie die binnenkomt bewust zouden verwerken, zouden we gek worden. Meestal zijn mensen zich ook niet bewust van hoe gestrest ze zijn, totdat er een punt van opluchting is en de stress langzaam weggaat. Er is nog niet veel bewijs voor een grote rol van onbewuste stress. Uit de bevindingen die ook hierboven staan beschreven lijkt het erop dat de totale aan stress gerelateerde fysiologische activiteit door zowel stressors en cognitieve perseveratie als onbewuste stress gerelateerde cognitie wordt veroorzaakt.
Beperkt emotioneel bewustzijn
Er zijn wel wat indirecte bevindingen gedaan. Bij onderdrukkers persoonlijkheid wordt gedefinieerd als hoog defensief en laag angstig. Zij presenteren zichzelf als betere personen. Het laag angstige kan echter beter gezien worden als angst onderdrukkend. Onderdrukkers hebben over het algemeen sterkere stress responsen en lijken chronisch gestrest. Dit leidt tot hoger risico op ziekte. Andere persoonlijkheden met beperkt emotioneel bewustzijn zijn ook geassocieerd met gezondheidrisico’s. Alexithymia is hier een voorbeeld van. Bij deze stoornis heeft een persoon geen worden voor emotie en moeilijkheden in het begrijpen en communiceren van emotie. Vaak hebben mensen met alexythymia last van subjectieve somatische klachten (klachten zonder medische oorzaak). De mensen met beperkt emotioneel bewustzijn hebben wel stress responsen, maar dan zonder het affectieve deel. Doordat zij zich niet bewust zijn van de stress respons zoeken zij ook geen manier om er mee om te gaan. Dit leidt ertoe dat de stress respons door blijft gaan, wat een vergrote kans op ziekte geeft. Het niet bewust zijn van de emotie, maar wel de fysiologische respons hebben wordt ook wel affectieve-autonome dissociatie genoemd. Een andere route van onbewuste stress en affectieve-autonome dissociatie bevat de subjectieve somatische klachten. Het kan zijn dat mensen door gebrek aan begrip van emotie de bijbehorende fysiologische responsen toeschrijven aan ziekte.
