Wat is de waarheid achter theorieën?
Theorieën zijn nodig om dingen te kunnen verklaren. Met deze verklaringen kan men voorspellingen maken voor de toekomst. In wetenschap wordt de realiteit geobserveerd. Uit de observaties leidt de wetenschapper een theorie af door middel van inductie. Als een waarneming faalt, kan dit alsnog gebruikt worden voor andere observaties. De eerste theorie blijkt niet juist, maar een andere theorie kan dan wel juist zijn.
Theorie is onbewijsbaar, maar ook onvermijdelijk. Theorieën worden voortdurend aangepast totdat er een consensus is in de wetenschap.
Hoe wordt er gespiegeld aan de natuurwetenschappen?
Er wordt gestreefd naar een combinatie van determinisme en reductionisme. Determinisme gaat uit van de werking van causale mechanismen en het reductionisme gaat ervan uit dat de verklaarbaarheid van fenomenen in de onderliggende niveaus ligt. Dit wordt bijvoorbeeld ook bij de biologische benadering gebruikt. Verstoringen worden herleid naar fysiologische mechanismen en ook opgelost door deze fysiologische mechanismen te herstellen of aan te passen.
De leertheoretische benadering is een sterk deterministisch onderzoeksprogramma. Men gaat er hierbij vanuit dat gedrag aangeleerd is. De bijpassende gedragstherapie is voornamelijk effectief voor het behandelen van fobieën en impulsstoornissen.
De cognitieve benadering gaat uit dat een mix van leerervaringingen en informatieselectie en -verwerking gedrag veroorzaken. De cognitieve benadering is hierdoor minder reductionistisch dan de leertheoretische benadering.
Wat is de dynamiek voor de psychologie?
Naast de biologische, leertheoretische en cognitieve benadering, is er ook de hermeneutische methode. De hermeneutische methode houdt in dat wordt begrepen wat zich afspeelt in de belevingswereld van de persoon. Het onbewuste, de vrije wil en het holisme.
Hoe wordt de theorie gebruikt in de praktijk?
Een technisch eclecticisme is een aanpak waarbij verschillende therapeutische technieken ingezet worden zonder theoretische integratie na te streven. Dit is niet de beste oplossing, maar ook niet een slechte optie. Effectstudies spelen een belangrijke rol in de toepassing van onderzoek in de praktijk. Een therapie is beter als het meer problemen oplost, het een snellere behandeling is dan andere opties en wanneer de effecten duurzaam zijn.
