Tijdens deze studie die in Rotterdam is uitgevoerd zijn 6775 participanten van 55 jaar en ouder getest op extensieve screeningstesten voor de ogen, het gezichtsveld en de fundusfotografie. Het is gebleken dat bij proefpersonen jonger dan 75 jaar het gezichtsverlies met name werd veroorzaakt door myope degeneratie en optische neuropathie. Het is gebleken dat bij proefpersonen ouder dan 75 jaar het gezichtsverlies met name werd veroorzaakt door maculadegeneratie en cataract. Helaas kan er weinig gedaan worden aan de exponentionele stijging van blindheid wanneer men ouder wordt, maar een adequate implementatie van een cataractoperatie kan zorgen voor een afname in gezichtsverlies.
