Intro

Backpacking or traveling in Congo-Brazzaville?

  • Congo-Brazzaville is like a well-kept secret for those looking for pristine nature, epic landscapes and a culture so rich you could spend hours talking about it by the campfire. Activities abound: trek through the rainforest, cruise the Congo River, or go gorilla spotting in Odzala-Kokoua National Park. Don't forget your jungle hat, because here you go deep into the jungle!
  • Activities spotting: gorilla trekking in Odzala-Kokoua National Park; boating on the Congo River; hiking through the Lefini Reserve; relaxing on the beaches of Pointe-Noire; visit the loufoulakari waterfalls; spend the night in the wetlands of Conkouati-Douli National Park; discover the urban life of Brazzaville; see the Basilica of St. Anne; canoe in the Ktokou-Pikounda National Park.
  • Animal spotting: a true paradise for animal lovers including the Western lowland gorilla, forest elephant, bongo (not the instrument, but an antelope), African gray parrot, Nile crocodile, blue turaca, red-bellied bee-eater, goliath beetle.
  • Food spotting: Forget the rigid table setting, this food demands to be eaten with the hands, poule moambé (chicken in a creamy sauce made of palm nuts), liboké de poisson (fish in banana leaves), fufu (the Congolese version of comfort food), makemba (fried or boiled banana), saka-saka (stewed cassava leaves), madesu (bean stew), mafe (peanut stew), sorrel soup (soup with all kinds of healthy stuff).

Studying in Congo-Brazzaville?

  • Studying here means studying in the heart of Africa! The education system is developing, but you can at least find studies in medicine, engineering and agriculture.
  • City of study: Brazzaville.
  • Language: French.

Internship in Congo-Brazzaville?

  • Here you can intern in NGOs, nature parks or international companies. From ecology to development projects, you will mainly find internships with NGOs and international aid organizations.
  • Competencies: intercultural communication, flexibility, leadership in challenging situations, French and Lingala!

Volunteering in Congo-Brazzaville?

  • Would you like to do your part? There is plenty to do in the areas of conservation, education and community development. From teaching in local schools and helping street children to protecting endangered species like chimpanzees, you can really make a difference here.

Working in Congo-Brazzaville?

  • The economy in Congo-Brazzaville is growing because of the oil, mining and forest management sectors. Recent investments have also been made in infrastructure, tourism and renewable energy.
  • Expats work mainly in the oil and gas industry, but also in the mining, telecommunications and banking sectors. There are also those who work for NGOs and international aid organizations to provide aid and education in a country where it is desperately needed.

Working as a digital nomad in Congo-Brazzaville?

  • Not very well known for the digital nomad, but if you like to go off the beaten track, then you are in the right place! Internet is available, but don't expect the same speed as in the big cities of Europe. But hey, what do you prefer - a hip coworking space, or working with a view of the jungle?
  • Favorite locations: Brazzaville, Point-Noire.

Living in Congo-Brazzaville?

  • Living in Congo-Brazzaville is for adventurers. Life is slow and the culture is rich and welcoming. The nature is beautiful and combined with traditional music and dance, you can have unique experiences as an expat here.
  • The political situation is relatively stable compared to its neighbors, but there are still problems with the government. It is important to be aware of what is going on and to keep an eye on developments.
  • If you love nature, then you are in a beautiful place here, but it is also good to know that the country is dealing with deforestation and nature conservation issues. So you have to be able to handle this! There is a limited choice of international schools for expat children in Brazzaville and Pointe-Noire.
  • It is relatively safe, but be alert, especially in the evenings.
  • Climate: tropical, so humid summers and rainy seasons.
  • Language: French and many local languages. Make sure you speak French, otherwise you are a bit lost.
  • Health insurance: medical facilities are very limited. Medical evacuation is necessary for more serious treatments. So make sure you have your own good health insurance.

Congo-Brazzaville: Updates & Travel

Travel in Congo-Brazzaville

  • Congo-Brazzaville or Republic of Congo, a much smaller country located above the “other Congo,” is a lot safer than its larger neighbor. However, the region can still be quite unsettled and unsafe, for example near the border with Congo. The country has beautiful nature and consists largely of dense jungle that has hardly been touched by human hands. That jungle is home to gorillas and endless numbers of chimpanzees, which helps make it a good destination for ecotourism. Because of the unrest, traveling through Congo is challenging.

From language courses to gap year abroad, from work experience to volunteering abroad, from paid work to internship abroad, from mountaineering to diving and from backpacking to travel around the world

What social activities can you do abroad?

    • Opportunities are found in the areas of helping, learning or studying. You can get involved to volunteer in a social project at a school in Africa, Asia or Latin America. You can get involved in nature, in a project with animals or cleaning the sea or beaches. Those who want to learn more can choose for example a language course in Latin America, Spain or South Africa.

What work related activities can you do abroad?

    • If you want to gain work experience, and/or also earn money, go and work abroad. You can combine backpacking in Australia with temporary work. You can work on campsites in Europe or bush camps in Africa. You can pretty much go all over the world to work in the hospitality industry, hotels and hostels, in the healthcare sector or for example at a diving school.

What sports activities to do abroad?

    • Have you ever thought of mountain biking, rafting (going down a wild river on a raft or rubber dinghy, climbing or canoeing), survival (which involves building rafts, climbing or canoeing), abseiling (descending a rock face while secured to ropes), zip-lining (whizzing down a cable), canyoning (starting at the top of a river and then climbing, swimming, diving down the bed) or caving (scrambling, wriggling and crawling through caves and crevices)?
    • Maybe you feel more comfortable on a bodyboard (on a half-wave surfboard, you surf the high waves lying down-with flippers), on a hang glider or while paragliding (with a parachute you float down a mountain or dune), hydrospeeding (on a bodyboard with flippers and a wetsuit on you go down a wild river via rapids) or Tiefschneeskiing (racing down through powder snow)?
