Intro

Backpacking or travelling in São Tomé and Príncipe?

  • This island is so remote that you sometimes feel like an explorer exploring the new world! It is small, but the beauty is breathtaking, with wild rainforests and beautiful beaches.
  • Activities spotting: climb Pico de São Tomé; explore the cocoa plantations, dive and snorkel around the islands; walk in the Oetong Forest; canoe on the Lagoa Azul; discover the history and culture of São Tomé; taste chocolate!; spot birds in the Oeiras National Park; relax on the beautiful beaches; explore the authentic markets.
  • Animals spotting: monk monkeys, turtles, red-footed kestrels, vervet monkeys, many colorful fish, sea lions, parrots.
  • Food spotting: calulu, baiacu, feijoada, moqueca, seafood rice, coconut rice, mendioca, chocolate. Studying in São Tomé and Príncipe?
  • The quality of education is not always top notch, but there are some universities that focus on environmental science and international relations. Studying here can feel like a lesson in 'living in the jungle' - you learn a lot outside of the books!
  • Study cities: São Tomé.
  • Language: Portuguese.

Internships in São Tomé and Príncipe?

  • Internships are limited, but there are opportunities in the non-profit sector and ecological projects. Expect a lot of hands-on experience and sometimes more 'adventure' than 'work'.
  • Competencies: intercultural communication, project management, negotiation, living on an island.

Volunteering in São Tomé and Príncipe?

  • There are volunteer opportunities in various areas. Think of biodiversity projects, coral reef protection, sustainable and local agriculture, healthcare, education and childcare.

Working in São Tomé and Príncipe?

  • The country is growing, so there are opportunities to find jobs! Most foreigners work in NGOs or in tourism, education and healthcare. You can also find specific jobs in construction, oil and gas.
  • Work culture: The work culture is informal and you may have to reassess your deadlines. "African time" is a real term, so don't worry if your colleagues are a few minutes (or hours) late every now and then.

Working as a digital nomad in São Tomé and Príncipe?

  • Digital nomads are quite rare here, but that can make it all the more fun. The internet is not always reliable, but there are nice cafes where you can work with a view of the ocean.
  • Favorite locations: you have to find out for yourself, because apart from the big cities we don't know...

Living in São Tomé and Príncipe?

  • Living here is like a holiday in the tropics, every day! The lifestyle is relaxed and you will quickly feel at home among the friendly locals.
  • Why yes, why not? The natural beauty, friendly culture and peaceful lifestyle are major draws, along with the variety of outdoor sports and delicious food. However… infrastructure is limited, the remote location can make you feel isolated and the cost of living (especially if you’re into your Western treats) can be quite high.
  • Education: Limited options, but they are there! And your kids might learn some unique skills, like balancing a coconut on their head!
  • Safety: Safety is generally good, but as always, be careful and keep an eye on your valuables. And if someone asks you to open their coconut – maybe just say “no” politely.
  • Culture: The culture is a mix of Portuguese and African influences. From music and dance to delicious food, you’ll always find something new to discover. And the festivals are a feast for the senses!
  • Health insurance: Healthcare is limited, so make sure you have your own comprehensive health insurance.

Sao Tome and Principe: Updates & Travel

Travel in Sao Tome and Principe

  • São Tomé and Príncipe consists of six islands, of which the island of São Tomé is the largest island with a capital of the same name. Travelers mainly come to São Tomé and Príncipe for the nature with its volcanic areas, many birds, plant species and beautiful beaches. It is a good place to stay for a short or longer period.
  • Cão Grande is a very impressive 663 meter high volcanic pointy mountain on the island of São Tomé.
  • Whale watching is best in the months of July to October, when whales swim around the São Tomé and Príncipe islands. You can watch these beautiful animals from a distance on an island but also up close on a tour boat.
  • Praia Banana is the most famous beach of São Tomé and Príncipe where you can snorkel, swim and dance at the beach bar.
  • Claudio Corallo Chocolate Factory is a chocolate factory of cocoa and coffee plantation owner Claudio Corallo and is definitely worth a tour (and tasting the delicious chocolate).

From language courses to gap year abroad, from work experience to volunteering abroad, from paid work to internship abroad, from mountaineering to diving and from backpacking to travel around the world

What social activities can you do abroad?

    • Opportunities are found in the areas of helping, learning or studying. You can get involved to volunteer in a social project at a school in Africa, Asia or Latin America. You can get involved in nature, in a project with animals or cleaning the sea or beaches. Those who want to learn more can choose for example a language course in Latin America, Spain or South Africa.

What work related activities can you do abroad?

    • If you want to gain work experience, and/or also earn money, go and work abroad. You can combine backpacking in Australia with temporary work. You can work on campsites in Europe or bush camps in Africa. You can pretty much go all over the world to work in the hospitality industry, hotels and hostels, in the healthcare sector or for example at a diving school.

What sports activities to do abroad?

    • Have you ever thought of mountain biking, rafting (going down a wild river on a raft or rubber dinghy, climbing or canoeing), survival (which involves building rafts, climbing or canoeing), abseiling (descending a rock face while secured to ropes), zip-lining (whizzing down a cable), canyoning (starting at the top of a river and then climbing, swimming, diving down the bed) or caving (scrambling, wriggling and crawling through caves and crevices)?
    • Maybe you feel more comfortable on a bodyboard (on a half-wave surfboard, you surf the high waves lying down-with flippers), on a hang glider or while paragliding (with a parachute you float down a mountain or dune), hydrospeeding (on a bodyboard with flippers and a wetsuit on you go down a wild river via rapids) or Tiefschneeskiing (racing down through powder snow)?
